Full Description
Sierra Nevada National Park and the 2,500-metre viewpoints
The Sierra Nevada is the highest mountain range in mainland Spain and one of the highest in Europe, and its protected National Park sits just above Granada. On this tour you reach around 2,500 metres by 4x4, well above the tree line, where the air is cool even in summer and the views stretch over the Granada plain.
Your guide chooses the tracks and viewpoints, and stops long enough for photographs and short walks. The safari is often chosen as one of the best day trips from Granada for anyone who wants nature. The road surface is mostly dirt or minor roads with very little traffic, so a warm layer and sturdy shoes are useful.
Mulhacén and the highest peaks
Mulhacén rises to 3,479 metres and is the highest summit on the Iberian mainland. Its name recalls Muley Hacén, a Nasrid ruler of Granada. From the tour's viewpoints you see the north face of the range and its neighbouring peaks such as Veleta and Alcazaba, often with snow well into spring.
Together they make one of the most impressive mountain skylines in Europe. Your guide explains the geology of the range, which is formed of ancient rock lifted by the same forces that shaped the Alps, and how the mountains shape the local climate and the water that reaches Granada.
Old trails, the Roman gold mine and the Camino de los Neveros
The tour follows routes that are centuries old. Near Cenes de la Vega you find traces of a Roman gold mine, because the Genil river that supplies water to Granada also carried gold that the Romans exploited. The Genil rises on the slopes of Mulhacén.
Another historic route is the Camino de los Neveros, the path used by the neveros, men who carried snow and ice down from the mountains to Granada in hot summers before refrigeration. Hearing these stories on the spot gives the landscape meaning, and is one reason a guided safari is more rewarding than driving up alone.
Wildlife, the mountain hut and the choice of morning or sunset
Wildlife on the tour includes the Iberian ibex, a wild goat that climbs rocky slopes, and birds of prey such as griffon vultures and eagles. Sightings are never guaranteed, but the guide knows where to look, and binoculars help. A drink is included at a panoramic mountain hut at around 2,500 metres.
The morning tour starts at about 9 am and lasts around seven hours, with time to walk and eat, since lunch is not included. The sunset tour lasts around six and a half hours and finishes with the sun going down over the range. The drive back to Granada after dark, with the city lights far below, is memorable.
