Overview
This shared coach day trip takes you east from the Costa del Sol along the Axarquía coast to two of Andalusia's prettiest places. First comes Frigiliana, a whitewashed village of Moorish lanes in the hills, then Nerja, a relaxed seaside town famous for the Balcony of Europe viewpoint and its beaches. In the default option, which leaves from Malaga city centre, entry to the spectacular Nerja Caves is included. The day is built around free time rather than guided walks, with a Spanish and English-speaking escort on the coach, so it suits travellers who like to explore at their own rhythm. Other options start from Torremolinos, Benalmádena or Fuengirola without the cave ticket.

Full Description
Frigiliana, the white village of the Axarquía
Frigiliana clings to a hillside about six kilometres inland from Nerja, and its old quarter is one of the best-preserved Moorish-Mudéjar townscapes in Andalusia. Steep cobbled lanes, often laid in patterns of pebbles, wind between whitewashed houses with brightly painted doors and pots of geraniums. Ceramic tile panels on the walls tell the story of the 1569 revolt of the Moriscos and the battle fought on the rocky heights above the village.
With about an hour and a half of free time, you can climb to the top of the old quarter for views over the valley to the sea, browse the artisan shops and rest in one of the small squares. Look out for the Renaissance palace of the Counts of Frigiliana, which still produces sugar cane honey, a local speciality. The morning visit is the best time to visit Frigiliana, before the midday heat.
The Nerja Caves
The Nerja Caves were discovered in 1959 by a group of local boys exploring a hole near the village of Maro, and they turned out to be one of the most impressive cave systems in Spain. The visitor route leads through vast chambers filled with stalactites, stalagmites and curtain-like formations, and one hall holds a giant column that rises from floor to ceiling. Archaeologists have also found Palaeolithic paintings and traces of prehistoric life deep inside.
In the default option your Nerja Caves tickets are included, so there is no queue to buy them on the day. The visit takes about 45 minutes and involves many steps, and the temperature inside stays cool all year, so a light layer is welcome in summer. The other options do not include the caves; entry can be bought on site during the free time in Nerja.
Nerja and the Balcony of Europe
Nerja is a relaxed, low-rise seaside town at the eastern end of the Costa del Sol, set between the mountains of the Sierra Almijara and a coastline of small coves. Its best-known spot is the Balcony of Europe, a palm-lined promenade built on the site of an old fort that juts out over the sea. A Spanish king who visited in 1885, after an earthquake hit the region, is said to have given it its name, and the view along the cliffs explains why.
Next to the viewpoint stands the white Church of El Salvador, and narrow streets of shops and cafés lead back into the old centre. From here you can walk down to the small beaches of Calahonda and El Salón tucked below the cliffs. Many visitors planning a Nerja day trip from Malaga are surprised by how calm and authentic the town feels compared with the busier resorts further west.
Burriana Beach and the Nerja coastline
Burriana is Nerja's largest and liveliest beach, a long stretch of sand with clear water, a seafront promenade and many open-air restaurants serving grilled fish and paella cooked over wood fires. It is about a 15 to 20-minute walk from the Balcony of Europe along the coast, making it an easy option during your free time if you would like lunch with a sea view or a quick swim in summer.
With about three and a half hours in Nerja, you have time to combine the caves (in the default option), the viewpoint, a stroll through the centre and a meal by the sea without hurrying. Bring swimwear in the warmer months and comfortable shoes for the cobbles, and keep an eye on the meeting time given by your escort for the return to the Costa del Sol.
The Axarquía coast and how the day works
The drive east from Malaga follows the Axarquía, a region of rolling hills covered with avocado, mango and olive groves, scattered white villages and a coastline facing the Mediterranean. It takes about an hour to reach Frigiliana, and the short 20-minute hop down to Nerja follows. The order of the visits may change on some days, but the time in each place stays the same.
This is a shared coach tour with a Spanish and English-speaking escort who gives practical information on board; there is no guided walk in the villages, which leaves you free to explore. Six options differ only in their departure point and in whether the Nerja Caves ticket is included, so choose the one closest to your hotel in Malaga, Torremolinos, Benalmádena or Fuengirola.
