Full Description

Caminito del Rey, the King's Little Path

Caminito del Rey was built between 1901 and 1905 so that workers could move materials between two hydroelectric plants at the Chorro and Gaitanejo waterfalls. It takes its name from King Alfonso XIII, who crossed it in 1921 when the nearby dam was inaugurated. Over the decades the old concrete path crumbled and became known as the most dangerous walk in the world, and it was closed after several accidents.

After a major restoration it reopened in 2015 with wooden walkways fixed to the rock beside the original ruins, and it is now safe and well managed. The Caminito del Rey tour is one-way and takes around three hours with the guide, who tells the stories behind the trail. If you wonder whether Caminito del Rey is worth it, the combination of history, engineering and dramatic scenery makes it one of the best days out from Malaga.

Gaitanes Gorge and the Guadalhorce River

The heart of the walk is the Gaitanes Gorge, a narrow limestone canyon carved by the Guadalhorce River. The walls rise hundreds of metres in places and come within a few metres of each other at the narrowest point, so the walkway seems to hang in the air, around one hundred metres above the green water. A long suspended footbridge crosses the gorge and is the moment most visitors remember.

Look up and you may see griffon vultures circling on the thermals, and mountain goats sometimes climb the cliffs. Below you the river flows between reeds and pools of unusual colour. Your guide points out the best viewpoints for photographs, the old workers' path underneath and the small details of the rock that most walkers miss when they go independently.

El Chorro and the Northern Access

The route runs through the countryside around El Chorro, at the foot of the Sierra de Huma, a landscape of reservoirs, pine woods and sharp ridges. Our coach uses the northern access, and after a short break the group follows the trail in one direction, finishing at the other end where the coach meets you. The setting is popular with climbers and hikers, and the surrounding lakes are a vivid green-blue.

Officially the whole route is just under eight kilometres, including the paths that lead to and from the walkways. Much of it is easy walking on flat boards and gravel, with some gentle slopes. Helmets are provided at the entrance and must be worn, and rules are strict for safety. Joining a guided group also saves you working out how to get to Caminito del Rey from Malaga by train, bus and taxi.

Practical Tips and the Best Time to Visit Caminito del Rey

Caminito del Rey tickets are limited and often sell out well in advance, which is one of the strongest reasons to book a tour with the ticket included. The best time to visit is spring and autumn, when temperatures are mild; summer mornings are already warm and the path has some shade, while winter days can be crisp and clear. In strong wind or heavy rain the path may close for safety.

Wear closed shoes with grip, bring water, a snack and sun protection, and carry a valid ID, since names are checked at the entrance. Only small backpacks are allowed on the walkways. The guide keeps the group together, allows time for photos and gives clear safety advice, so you can concentrate on the views.
