Full Description
The Golden Triangle and the Mekong Boat Ride
The Golden Triangle is the point at Sop Ruak, in Chiang Saen district, where the Ruak River flows into the Mekong and the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet. From the Thai bank you look across the water to both neighbouring countries at once. The area was once known for its opium trade, a history now told in local museums, and today it is a calm riverside viewpoint watched over by a large golden seated Buddha on a boat-shaped platform.
The highlight of the day is the long-tail boat ride on the Mekong. The narrow wooden boat speeds along the wide brown river, close to the forested Laotian and Myanmar shores, and gives you the best view of how the three countries face each other. Late afternoon light on the river makes this the best time to visit the Golden Triangle for photos.
Wat Rong Khun, the White Temple
The first major sight of the day is Wat Rong Khun, the White Temple, just south of Chiang Rai town. Begun in 1997 by a Chiang Rai-born artist and still being expanded, it is a Buddhist temple like no other: its white plaster stands for the purity of the Buddha and the mirror glass set into every surface for his wisdom. The approach crosses a bridge over a sea of sculpted hands reaching up from below.
Your guide explains the symbols of the bridge, the gate of heaven and the murals inside the ordination hall, where photos are not allowed. Around the hall you find white pavilions, a pond with ornamental fish and a bright golden building. The White Temple is open daily from morning to late afternoon; arriving before lunch, as this tour does, avoids the largest crowds.
Wat Rong Suea Ten, the Blue Temple
After lunch at a local restaurant, the tour continues to Wat Rong Suea Ten, the Blue Temple, on the northern side of Chiang Rai. Its name means House of the Dancing Tiger, a memory of the tigers that once roamed the riverbank. The hall, completed in 2016 on the site of an abandoned temple, was designed by a local artist who trained in the same artistic circle as the creator of the White Temple.
Everything glows in cobalt blue and gold: the twisting naga serpents along the stairs, the carved roofs and the walls inside. At its heart sits a large white Buddha, serene against the intense blue. The temple is small, so a short guided visit is enough to enjoy it fully. Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, and take off your shoes before entering.
Baan Dam Museum, the Black House
Baan Dam, the Black House, is the dark counterpart to the White Temple and one of the most unusual sights in northern Thailand. Created over decades by a Chiang Rai national artist as his studio and gallery, it is a park of dozens of buildings in black-stained teak, brick and glass, some in traditional northern style, others shaped like domes or boats.
Inside the halls you find long carved tables, buffalo horns, animal skins, bones, shells and sculptures arranged like a strange cabinet of curiosities, meant to make visitors reflect on life and death. It is not a temple but an art museum, so the mood is very different from the morning's visit. Your guide leads you through the main halls and garden before the drive north.
The Long Neck Karen Village
In the afternoon you visit a Long Neck Karen village, where Kayan families who came from Myanmar keep their traditions. Kayan women traditionally wear spirals of brass around their necks from childhood. Over the years the coils press the collarbones and shoulders down, so the neck appears much longer, and the coils have become the best-known symbol of the community.
Walking along the village lanes, you see women weaving colourful scarves on backstrap looms and selling handicrafts from small wooden stalls. Your guide explains the history of the Kayan people and their life in Thailand. The respectful way to visit is to greet people, ask before taking portraits and buy a scarf or a craft directly from the women who made it.
