Overview
Spend a full day on the water on this shared snorkelling trip from Bang Bao Pier on Koh Chang. Depending on sea conditions, the crew takes you either to the protected coral gardens of Koh Rang National Park – Koh Rang, Koh Yak Yai and Koh Yak Lek – or to Koh Chang's local reefs and the sunken HTMS Chang, a former naval ship that now forms an artificial reef. You snorkel at three sites, enjoy a Thai buffet lunch with fresh fruit and soft drinks, and have masks, fins and life jackets provided. Return hotel transfers from the west coast are included, and groups stay at a maximum of 35 travellers.

Full Description
Bang Bao Pier
The day begins at Bang Bao in the south-west of Koh Chang, a fishing village of wooden houses on stilts with a long pier reaching into the sea. After the hotel pickup you stop at the dive centre on the pier, where the crew fits your mask, snorkel, fins and life jacket and explains the plan for the day. The boat leaves at about 9:00.
Bang Bao is worth a short look before or after the trip: seafood restaurants hang over the water, fishing boats unload their catch and the views over the islands to the south are wide. Guests staying on the east coast, where pickup is not available, meet the crew directly at the pier.
Koh Rang National Park
Koh Rang is the jewel of Mu Ko Chang National Park: a group of small, uninhabited islands about an hour south of Koh Chang by boat. The water is protected, there is no runoff from villages, and visibility is often excellent, which is why a Koh Rang snorkelling day trip is the most popular sea outing on the island. The first stop gives you about an hour on the reef.
Look for brain corals, staghorn branches, giant clams, clownfish in their anemones and, on lucky days, a sea turtle gliding past. A national park fee applies when the route goes to Koh Rang and is paid in cash on the boat. Beginners can stay near the boat while stronger swimmers follow the reef edge.
Koh Yak Yai and Koh Yak Lek
The twin islands of Koh Yak Yai and Koh Yak Lek sit close together in the Koh Rang group. At Koh Yak Yai the boat stops for about 80 minutes: lunch is served on board, and then you swim and snorkel along shallow coral slopes and white sand where colourful reef fish gather in large numbers.
Koh Yak Lek, ten minutes away, is the last stop with around an hour in the water. The reef here drops gently into deeper blue, with parrotfish, sergeant majors and shoals of silver fusiliers. After the final swim the boat turns back towards Koh Chang, a calm ride of about 80 minutes with time to dry off and enjoy the views of the island's forested mountains.
HTMS Chang Wreck and Koh Chang Reefs
When the sea makes the trip to Koh Rang uncomfortable, the crew follows the alternative route around Koh Chang's own reefs, including the sunken HTMS Chang. This former naval ship was sunk deliberately in 2012 to create an artificial reef, and it has since become covered in marine growth and visited by large shoals of fish.
Snorkellers float above the wreck site while the guide explains its story, then the day continues at nearby reef sites with good visibility. Whichever route you follow, you still enjoy three snorkelling stops, lunch and drinks, so the day has the same value with less time in open water, and the guide always explains the choice before departure.
