Full Description

Koh Hong and the 360-degree viewpoint

Koh Hong is the star of every Hong Island tour from Krabi: a towering limestone island in Than Bok Khorani National Park with a soft white beach, clear turquoise water and coral close to shore. The name comes from the Thai word for room, a reference to the enclosed lagoon hidden in its heart. You spend about an hour here to swim, snorkel and relax in the shade of the trees.

Fit travellers can climb the steep stairway path through the forest to the island's viewpoint, where a platform gives a 360-degree panorama over Koh Hong's beach and the scattered islets of the Andaman Sea. Wear sandals with grip and bring water; the views are clearest in the morning, and the effort is rewarded with one of the best photos of your trip.

Hong Lagoon

Hong Lagoon is a natural pool of calm emerald water enclosed almost completely by sheer cliffs, reached through a narrow opening in the rock. Boats slide in slowly while you look up at walls draped in tropical plants and dark streaks where swiftlets once nested and local people collected their nests.

The visit lasts about twenty minutes and depends on the tide: at high tide boats can enter, while at low tide the lagoon may be viewed from the entrance. It is one of the most peaceful moments of the day, with the noise of the open sea left outside. Keep your camera ready for the reflections of the cliffs on the still water.

Koh Lao Lading

Koh Lao Lading is a tiny island with a small beach of white sand squeezed between two tall limestone cliffs, often called a hidden paradise because of its sheltered setting. The water is shallow and calm in good weather, ideal for a first swim of the day and for photos framed by the rocks.

The stop lasts about thirty minutes, and the beach can feel busy at peak times because it is so small, which is why the tour visits early. Bring water shoes, as the sea floor has some rocks and coral fragments. A national park fee applies on the islands and is paid in cash on the day. Keep the ticket with you, as rangers may check it at the next stops.

Koh Pak Bia

Koh Pak Bia is where you spend the longest stop, about seventy-five minutes, with lunch served on the island and time to swim and snorkel. Its sandy spit and clear water around the rocks make it one of the best snorkelling spots in the Hong group, with reef fish visible a few metres from the shore.

The halal buffet lunch includes vegetarian dishes, followed by seasonal fruit, soft drinks and snacks. After eating you can take a short walk along the sand or float above the reef with the snorkelling mask provided; fins and dry bags are not included, so bring your own if you prefer. Use reef-safe sunscreen and avoid standing on the coral to protect the reef.

Choosing your boat and the best time to visit

The same route can be booked three ways. The speedboat is the most popular, fast and comfortable for families; the traditional wooden long-tail boat is slower but gives a classic Krabi feeling, with up to 35 guests; and the high-speed catamaran offers two viewing decks and an indoor toilet. All include lunch, the guide and hotel transfers.

The best time to visit the Hong Islands is the dry season from November to April, when the Andaman Sea is calmer and the water clearest. From May to October the sea can be rough and the itinerary may change with tides and weather. Boats leave around 09:00, so eat breakfast before pickup; lunch is served around midday.
