Overview
This small-group adventure, limited to 10 guests, combines two of Krabi's finest natural sights in one day. After pickup from your hotel by air-conditioned van, you paddle a sea kayak with a professional English-speaking guide through Ao Thalane, a bay of mangroves and limestone canyons where kingfishers, herons and crab-eating macaques live. Then a long-tail boat takes you to Koh Hong for lunch, a look at its hidden lagoon and snorkelling in clear water. National park fees, water, fruit and insurance are included. It suits active couples, friends and families with children aged 4 and over. Shorter half-day kayaking, a full day of kayaking only, and a sunset paddle with beach barbecue are also available.

Full Description
Ao Thalane mangrove bay
Ao Thalane lies about halfway along the coast between Than Bok Khorani and Krabi town, a bay of mangroves and limestone towers that many paddlers rate among the most beautiful in Thailand. The tour starts at a quiet pier, where your guide fits life jackets, explains paddling technique and leads the group out onto the calm, sheltered water.
Unlike open-sea kayaking, Ao Thalane kayaking is gentle and protected from waves, which makes it a good first experience for beginners. The scenery changes at every turn, from wide lagoons ringed by cliffs to tunnels of mangrove roots. The morning session of the full-day tour lasts about three hours, with stops to rest and take photos.
Canyons, channels and wildlife
The highlight of the paddle is the network of narrow channels that cut between two towering limestone massifs, like hidden passageways through the rock. They are passable on all but the lowest tides, and your guide times the route so you can glide through the quietest parts of the bay.
Ao Thalane is known for its rich wildlife. Several species of kingfisher, little herons and crab-eating macaques are seen on most trips, along with mudskippers and fiddler crabs on the mangrove mud. Keep your voice low to see more, and never feed the monkeys. This undeveloped bay remains far less crowded than the island beaches, giving you a real sense of nature.
Koh Hong by long-tail boat
On the full-day option with Hong Island, a long-tail boat carries you from the kayak area to Koh Hong, the towering limestone island known as the most beautiful of this part of the Andaman coast. As you approach, sheer walls rise from turquoise water, and lunch is served before time on the beach.
In the middle of the island lies a hidden lagoon used by local fishermen, where swiftlet nests were once collected from the cliffs. The coral around Koh Hong is excellent for snorkelling, with reef fish close to shore. This combination of a mangrove kayak in the morning and an island afternoon makes it one of the most complete Hong Island day trips from Krabi.
Sunset at Laem Jamuk Khwai with beach barbecue
The sunset option starts in the afternoon with a paddle through the mangroves and ends at Laem Jamuk Khwai, a headland where fresh spring water cascades down the cliff, so you can rinse off the salt. A short climb leads to a viewpoint that many call the best sunset spot on this coast.
While you watch the sky change colour, the crew prepares a barbecue on the beach. After dinner a long-tail boat takes you back to the kayak pier under the stars, before the van drives you to your hotel. It lasts about four and a half hours and is a peaceful alternative to the busy sunset boat tours.
Choosing your option and the best time to go
Besides the full day with Hong Island, you can book a half-day paddle of about four hours with or without lunch, starting at 08:00 or 13:00, or a full day of kayaking with two different mangrove routes and lunch in between. All options include hotel transfers, the guide, park fees and insurance.
The bay can be visited all year because it is sheltered, but the best time to visit Ao Thalane is the dry season from November to April, when skies are clear and Hong Island's water is calmest. The programme may change with tides and weather. Bring swimwear, a T-shirt, shorts, a hat, sunscreen and a towel; luggage and large bags cannot be taken on the kayaks.
