Full Description

Ao Thalane mangrove forest

Ao Thalane is a sheltered bay and mangrove forest in Ao Luek district, north of Krabi Town, and one of the best places in Thailand for a Krabi mangrove kayak tour. Salt-tolerant trees grow in the tidal water with their roots above the surface, forming green tunnels that are cool and shaded even on hot days.

Mangroves are important nurseries for fish and crabs and protect the coastline, so exploring them in a quiet kayak is an eco-friendly way to see the area. Your guide explains how the forest works and points out the wildlife hiding among the roots.

Canyons, caves and lagoons

Beyond the mangroves, the paddling route follows channels between limestone cliffs, through narrow canyon-like passages and into quiet lagoons. Depending on the tide, the guide may take you into small caves and hidden bays that larger boats cannot reach.

The scenery changes constantly, from dense green forest to steep rock walls and open water with mountain views in the background. It is a favourite with photographers, so bring a camera in a waterproof bag. Allow time to drift and listen, because the quiet is part of the experience. Tides decide which passages are open, and the guide chooses the best route on the day.

Wildlife and the Crocodile Cave

Watch for wildlife as you glide along. Kingfishers and herons perch on branches, crab-eating macaques search the mud at low tide and lizards sometimes bask on the roots, especially if you stay quiet and let the kayak drift.

A special stop is the intriguing cave known as Crocodile Cave, a rock formation named for its shape. The guide explains the story and helps you to enter safely at the right tide. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but the mangrove is rich in life, and patience is usually rewarded with at least a few birds.

Timing, pickup and how much paddling to expect

The tour takes about four and a half hours including the transfer, with hotel pickup and drop-off included. The paddling is moderate, so a reasonable level of fitness is recommended, and beginners are welcome as the guide gives a short briefing on technique and safety before you set off.

Bring sunglasses, a hat, swimwear, sunscreen and insect repellent. Lunch is not included, so bring a snack or plan a meal afterwards. If you prefer not to do the paddling yourself, ask us before you book whether a guide-assisted seat can be arranged.
