Full Description

Railay peninsula and the boat ride from Ao Nang

Railay sits on a headland between Ao Nang and Krabi town, cut off from the mainland by sheer limestone cliffs, so the only way in is by boat. That is why people often ask how to get to Railay: for this class it is simple, as we collect you from your hotel and you cross by wooden long-tail boat in about fifteen minutes, landing on the sand with the cliffs rising straight above you.

With no cars and only footpaths linking its beaches, Railay feels like an island. It is one of the most beautiful corners of Krabi, with jungle, caves and tall karst towers, and climbing is the best way to experience it up close. The boat ride is part of the adventure, so keep your camera ready but in a waterproof bag.

The limestone climbing walls of Railay Beach

Railay has been a magnet for rock climbers since the late 1980s, when the first routes were bolted on its orange and grey cliffs, and today it is one of the best-known climbing destinations in Asia. The rock is solid limestone shaped into pockets, ledges and dripping tufa columns, which give natural holds that make it friendly for beginners.

Your instructor chooses walls and routes to match the group's level, starting with easier lines close to the beach so you can learn to trust your feet and the rope. Many routes give views over the turquoise water as you climb higher, and the shade of the overhangs keeps the rock cooler during the warm hours.

Phra Nang Beach and its cliffs

Some of the session's routes are found around Phra Nang Beach, at the tip of the Railay peninsula, often listed among the most beautiful beaches in Thailand. Fine white sand, emerald water and towering cliffs hung with plants make it a spectacular backdrop for your first climb.

At one end of the beach a small cave shrine is dedicated to a legendary sea princess, where local boatmen still leave offerings for safe journeys. If you have time after the class you can swim or relax here, but please respect the shrine. The beach is best in the morning before the boats arrive, and in the dry season from November to April the water is at its clearest.

Your half-day climbing session

The session lasts about four hours, starting at 09:00 or 14:00. It begins with a safety briefing: putting on the harness and helmet, tying in with a figure-eight knot and the commands between climber and belayer. The instructor then demonstrates basic technique such as using your legs, keeping your weight close to the rock and resting on good holds.

You then climb several routes of different styles while the instructor belays and coaches you from below, and you can also learn how to belay a partner under supervision. All climbing shoes, harnesses, helmets and ropes are provided. No experience is needed, but a reasonable level of fitness helps you enjoy more climbs.

Best time for climbing in Krabi

The best time to visit Railay for climbing is the dry season from about November to April, when the rock is dry and the sea is calm for the boat crossing. Morning sessions are cooler, while afternoon sessions end with golden light on the cliffs, a wonderful moment for photos from the beach.

During the rainy months climbing still runs on many days because several walls are sheltered by overhangs, but the class depends on safe weather. If it is cancelled because of poor weather, you can choose another date or a full refund. Bring water, sunscreen and insect repellent, as the beaches under the cliffs can be hot and humid.
