Full Description

The Chao Phraya River at Night

The Chao Phraya is Bangkok's main artery, a wide river that has carried traders, royal barges and rice boats for centuries and still divides the old city from the Thonburi bank. A Chao Phraya dinner cruise is one of the most popular things to do in Bangkok at night, because the heat eases, the temples are floodlit and the river traffic thins out.

Many visitors ask whether a Bangkok river cruise is worth it. The night view is very different from a daytime boat ride: the golden spires of the old city glow against a dark sky and the modern towers reflect on the water. The best time to go is a clear evening in the cool season, from November to February, although the boat sails all year.

Wat Arun and the Grand Palace from the Water

Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn, is the most recognisable silhouette on the river. Its central prang rises about 70 metres and is decorated with porcelain and shell fragments that catch the lights after dark. Across the water, the Grand Palace, begun in 1782 when Bangkok became the capital, and the neighbouring Wat Phra Kaew glow in gold, and the boat passes both slowly enough for photos.

If you want to go inside, visit these sites by day, because Grand Palace tickets and Wat Arun tickets are sold at each gate and dress rules apply. The dinner cruise gives you the second look, the evening one, and helps you decide which temples deserve a full visit. Other landmarks on the route include Wichai Prasit Fort, Wat Kalayanamit and the Santi Chai Prakan Royal Pavilion.

ICONSIAM and the Rama VIII Bridge

Upriver and downriver the mood changes from royal to contemporary. ICONSIAM, the large riverside shopping complex that opened in 2018, is lit in changing colours, and the Rama VIII Bridge, a cable-stayed crossing with a single tall pylon, is illuminated after dark and is one of the most photographed bridges in Bangkok.

These modern sights show a side of the city that temple visits rarely cover. From the rooftop deck, which is deliberately narrower than on larger boats, you can see both banks at once. Allow the full two hours, because the vessel turns and returns along the same stretch, so you see each landmark from a slightly different angle. This is the best way to see the Bangkok skyline at night.

Asiatique The Riverfront: Check-In and Boarding

Boarding takes place at Asiatique The Riverfront, a waterfront district built around old riverside trading warehouses. Check-in is at Warehouse No. 3 and opens from about 6:00 PM. The last check-in is 7:50 PM, but we recommend arriving by 7:00 PM because evening traffic in Bangkok can be heavy. Asiatique has shops, restaurants and a Ferris wheel, so arriving early costs you nothing.

If you are wondering how to get to Asiatique, the simplest way is a taxi or ride-hailing app from most central hotels, or the BTS to Saphan Taksin and then the shuttle boat that runs from Sathorn Pier to Asiatique in the evening. Hotel pickup is not included in this tour, so plan your own transport and allow extra time.

Dinner, Live Music and Your Seat on Board

Dinner is an international buffet with more than 30 dishes, including seafood, salmon and beef alongside a wide choice of other hot and cold dishes, served with water, soft drinks, tea and coffee. Vegetarian set menus are available on request at no extra charge if you tell us after booking, and a cake and song can be arranged for a birthday or anniversary. Any other drinks are at your own expense.

Live singers perform through the evening, followed by a classical Thai dance show. The default rooftop seat gives the widest views. The first and second floor indoor rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows and air conditioning, and the second floor front deck is open-air but does not see the stage. You choose a seating zone, not a seat number, and each party has its own table. If it rains, the cruise still sails and rooftop guests move indoors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

How much does the Chao Phraya dinner cruise cost?

The price depends on the seating option you choose, such as the rooftop deck or an air-conditioned room. The booking panel on this page shows the current price for each option, for adults and for children.

What is the difference between the seating options?

All options include the same dinner buffet, show and route. The rooftop deck on the third floor is open-air with the widest views, the second floor front deck is open-air and more private but does not see the stage, and the air-conditioned rooms on the first and second floors have floor-to-ceiling windows.

Is hotel pickup included?

No. You meet us at Asiatique The Riverfront. A taxi or ride-hailing app from most central Bangkok hotels is the easiest way to get there, and the shuttle boat from Sathorn Pier runs in the evening.

How long is the dinner cruise?

The cruise runs from 8:00 to 10:00 PM, about two hours on the water. Check-in opens earlier, from about 6:00 PM, and closes at 7:50 PM.

Is the cruise suitable for children?

Yes. Children aged 4 to 10 have a child ticket, and infants aged 3 and under are listed separately in the booking panel. The buffet has plenty of choice for younger guests.

What should I wear?

Smart casual is fine. In the evening the rooftop can be breezy and the indoor rooms are air-conditioned, so a light layer is useful.

Can I book for today or tomorrow?

Usually yes, depending on availability. The booking panel shows the dates and seating zones that are open, and rooftop seats must be booked in advance.

Which landmarks do we see from the boat?

Wichai Prasit Fort, Wat Arun, the Grand Palace, Wat Kalayanamit, the Santi Chai Prakan Royal Pavilion, ICONSIAM and the Rama VIII Bridge, plus Asiatique itself.

Can I get a vegetarian meal?

Yes, a vegetarian set menu is available at no extra charge. Tell us after you book so the kitchen can prepare it.

Is the Bangkok dinner cruise worth it?

For most visitors, yes. It combines dinner, live entertainment and the best night views of Wat Arun and the Grand Palace in one two-hour outing, without any walking or driving once you have boarded.
