Full Description

Eminönü and the mouth of the Golden Horn

Eminönü is where Istanbul's ferries have always left from: the quays below the New Mosque and the Spice Bazaar, the Galata Bridge with its fishermen, and the T1 tram passing behind. The cruise office is beside the pier on the side of the historic Zindan Han, and after check-in our team walks you to the boat. For a Bosphorus cruise from Eminönü this is the most convenient start in the city, ten minutes by tram from Sultanahmet and a short walk over the bridge from Karaköy.

The boat heads out under the Galata Bridge with the Galata Tower rising above Karaköy on the left, then passes the long modern cruise terminal of Galataport, the hillside houses of Cihangir and the Fine Arts University on the shore. The audio guide starts here, explaining how the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus shaped the city, and the first glasses of tea are poured.

Dolmabahçe, Beşiktaş and Ortaköy on the European shore

The first palace is Dolmabahçe, the sultans' nineteenth-century residence with a marble facade along the water, preceded by the Dolmabahçe Mosque and followed by the Beşiktaş football stadium and the ferry pier, one of the liveliest spots on the strait. Çırağan Palace comes next, then the waterside buildings of Galatasaray University, and the boat slows for Ortaköy, where the baroque Ortaköy Mosque stands on the quay under the first bridge.

The 15 July Martyrs Bridge, which most people still call the Bosphorus Bridge, spans the strait here, and the boat passes beneath it with a tiny islet, Galatasaray Islet, just beyond. This stretch has the densest sights of the route, so keep your phone ready; the audio guide, in thirty languages, covers each building in turn and the open deck gives a clear view in both directions.

Kuruçeşme, Arnavutköy, Bebek and Rumeli Fortress

Beyond the bridge the European shore is lined with the Bosphorus villages that Istanbul families love: Kuruçeşme with its waterside park, Arnavutköy with its rows of wooden yalı mansions from the nineteenth century standing right in the water, and Bebek with its curved bay, marina, mosque and cafés. The audio guide explains who built these houses and why the Bosphorus shore became the most desirable address in the empire.

The hillside then rises to Rumeli Fortress, built by Sultan Mehmet II in 1452, in a matter of months, to close the Bosphorus to ships before the conquest of Constantinople. Its three massive towers and the walls that run down to the shore are the climax of the European side, and because the fortress sits on the coast road away from the tram, a Bosphorus cruise past Rumeli Fortress is the easiest way to see it well.

The second bridge, Anadolu Hisarı, Küçüksu and Kandilli

At the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, the second Bosphorus crossing, the boat reaches the narrowest point of the strait and turns to the Asian shore, one hour into the cruise. Right under the bridge stands Anadolu Hisarı, the small Anatolian Fortress of the 1390s, the oldest Ottoman structure in Istanbul, at the mouth of the Göksu stream.

Heading south along the Asian side you pass Küçüksu Pavilion, the ornate white marble hunting lodge of the 1850s with its own little quay, and then the wooded headland of Kandilli with its old observatory and summer houses. The Asian shore is quieter and greener than the European one, and the audio guide fills this part of the route with stories of the summer life of the Ottoman court on the water.

Kuleli, Çengelköy, Beylerbeyi Palace and Kuzguncuk

The long waterfront building with twin towers at Kuleli is a former military high school from the nineteenth century, followed by Çengelköy, a village known for its small cucumbers, its tea gardens under plane trees and a mosque on the quay. Then comes Beylerbeyi Palace, the white marble summer palace of the 1860s where foreign monarchs stayed, with two little bathing pavilions on the water and terraced gardens behind.

Just before the first bridge again, Kuzguncuk shows its pastel wooden houses and a street where a mosque, two churches and a synagogue stand almost side by side. The audio guide points them out as the boat passes back under the Bosphorus Bridge from the Asian side, with the European skyline opposite now in the afternoon light.

Üsküdar, the Maiden's Tower and the return to Eminönü

The last stretch runs along the Üsküdar waterfront, the oldest Asian district of the city, with the Mihrimah Sultan Mosque and the Şemsi Pasha Mosque at the water's edge and the ferries shuttling across to Eminönü. Off the shore stands the Maiden's Tower on its rock, a Byzantine watchtower turned Ottoman lighthouse, the classic last photograph of any Bosphorus boat tour in Istanbul.

The boat then crosses the lower Bosphorus with the whole historic peninsula ahead, Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque lined up above the Sarayburnu point, and docks again at Eminönü two hours after departure. From the pier you are a minute from the tram, the Spice Bazaar and the Galata Bridge, so a late lunch of fish or a walk to the Grand Bazaar follows naturally.
