Overview

This Bosphorus sunset yacht cruise is the one to choose if you want a real person telling the stories rather than an audio track. A live English-speaking local guide sails with you for two hours from Kabataş square up the European shore past Dolmabahçe Palace, Ortaköy Mosque, Arnavutköy, Bebek and Rumeli Fortress to the second bridge, then back along the Asian side past the Anatolian Fortress, Küçüksu Palace and Beylerbeyi Palace to Maiden's Tower, where the sun goes down behind the Old City. Lemonade, tea, coffee, water, cookies, baklava and a fruit plate are served on a decorated yacht with covered seating. It is a shared cruise with no pickup; departure is at 16:15. A six-hour summer swimming cruise to the Princes' Islands is also offered.

  • Decorated yacht with indoor seating, so the cruise runs in rain
  • Optional six-hour swimming cruise to the Princes' Islands in summer

Full Description

Kabataş square and the European shore to Ortaköy

The cruise meets at Kabataş square on the seafront, opposite the Kabataş tram station where the T1 line ends and the F1 funicular arrives from Taksim, beside the glass lift of the metro entrance. Our team is there with a board fifteen minutes before the 16:15 departure. From the yacht the first landmarks come fast: the long marble front of Dolmabahçe Palace, then Çırağan Palace and, in a few minutes, the baroque Ortaköy Mosque sitting under the first Bosphorus Bridge.

What makes this Bosphorus sunset cruise different is the guide. Standing on deck, the guide explains why Dolmabahçe replaced Topkapı, which sultan built Ortaköy Mosque and what the Bosphorus Bridge changed when it opened in 1973, and answers questions as they come. Lemonade and tea are poured here and the yacht slows for photographs beneath the bridge before continuing north.

Arnavutköy, Bebek and Rumeli Fortress

North of the bridge the European shore is lined with yalı, the wooden waterfront mansions of Arnavutköy and Bebek, painted in reds, creams and greys with their bay windows hanging over the water. The guide points out the oldest and tells who built them. Bebek bay, with its park and small marina, is the most fashionable address on the strait, and the yacht keeps close to the shore so you can see the houses in detail.

The cruise then reaches Rumeli Fortress, the great castle built in 1452 to close the strait before the conquest of Constantinople, its towers and walls climbing the hillside right up to the road. This is the turning point of the route, under the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, the second Bosphorus crossing, and it is further north than most two-hour cruises go. Seeing Rumeli Fortress from the water with a guide to explain the siege is a highlight of the afternoon.

The Asian shore: Anatolian Fortress, Küçüksu and Beylerbeyi

Crossing to the Asian side, the yacht passes the Anatolian Fortress at the mouth of the Göksu stream, the smaller and older castle built in the 1390s, then the Küçüksu Palace, a small rococo hunting lodge of the 1850s with a marble quay that looks like a jewel box from the deck. The Asian shore is greener and quieter, with timber houses and gardens, and the guide fills this stretch with stories of Ottoman summer life on the Bosphorus.

Beylerbeyi Palace comes next, the white summer palace beside the Bosphorus Bridge where visiting royalty stayed, with its bathing pavilions on the water. Cookies, baklava and the fruit plate are served on this leg, and the light is turning gold. Guests who have taken a large sightseeing boat before notice the difference here: the yacht is low to the water, the deck is open and the guide is beside you.

Maiden's Tower at sunset

The yacht spends about fifteen minutes beside Maiden's Tower, the small white tower on an islet off Üsküdar, timed so that the sun sets behind the Old City while you are there. Across the water Topkapı Palace, Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Süleymaniye Mosque stand in silhouette, and the guide tells the legends of the tower, including the princess and the snake, while the sky changes colour.

This is the photograph everyone takes on a Bosphorus cruise in Istanbul, and from a yacht at water level it is better than from any terrace. Bring a light jacket, as the breeze picks up at dusk even in summer, and keep your camera ready for the call to prayer carrying across the water from Üsküdar as the lights come on along both shores.

Galata Bridge, Galata Tower and the return to Kabataş

The last leg crosses back to the European side past the Topkapı point, the Galata Bridge at the mouth of the Golden Horn and Galata Tower above Karaköy, then along the Galataport promenade to Kabataş. The city is lit by now, and the guide ends with practical tips on where to eat in Karaköy and Beşiktaş, both a short walk or tram ride from the pier. From Kabataş the T1 tram returns to Sultanahmet and the funicular climbs to Taksim in two minutes.

In summer the same company sails a six-hour group swimming cruise at 10:00 from Kabataş to the Princes' Islands in the Sea of Marmara, with swimming stops in clear coves, cold sandwiches and soft drinks on board; it is offered as a separate option on this page and is a full day rather than a sunset tour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private cruise?

It is a shared cruise on a decorated yacht with a live guide. It is not a private yacht; if you want the whole boat for your group, ask our team and we will suggest a private alternative.

How long does the sunset cruise take?

Two hours, from 16:15 to about 18:15, with the sunset stop at Maiden's Tower towards the end. The optional swimming cruise to the Princes' Islands lasts six hours.

Is hotel pickup included?

No. You meet at Kabataş square, which is the end of the T1 tram line from Sultanahmet and a two-minute funicular ride from Taksim.

What is included?

The two-hour guided yacht cruise, a live English-speaking local guide, lemonade, water, tea and coffee, cookies and baklava, and a freshly prepared fruit plate.

Is the price per person or per group?

Per person, with a child fare for ages 4 to 17 and free travel for children up to 3. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.

What is the difference between this and an audio-guide cruise?

A live guide sails with you, answers questions and adapts the commentary to the group, and the route goes further north to the second bridge with a long stop at Maiden's Tower for sunset. Refreshments are served throughout.

What does the cruise pass?

Dolmabahçe Palace, Çırağan Palace, Ortaköy Mosque, the Bosphorus Bridge, Arnavutköy, Bebek, Rumeli Fortress, the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, the Anatolian Fortress, Küçüksu Palace, Beylerbeyi Palace, Maiden's Tower, Topkapı Palace, the Galata Bridge, Galata Tower and Galataport.

What happens in bad weather?

The yacht has indoor and covered seating, so light rain does not stop the cruise. If the authorities close the Bosphorus to pleasure boats because of a storm, we move you to another date or refund you.

Is it suitable for children and for reduced mobility?

Families are welcome and children enjoy the snacks and the open deck. The yacht is not suitable for wheelchair users or for anyone with vertigo, seasickness or motion sickness, because boarding is by gangway and the boat moves.

What should I bring?

Sunglasses, a sun hat, sunscreen, comfortable clothes and a light jacket for after sunset, plus your camera. For the swimming cruise, swimwear and a towel.

What is the best season for a Bosphorus sunset cruise?

Spring and autumn give the clearest skies and the most comfortable temperatures; in summer the sunset is late and the breeze is welcome; in winter the cruise still runs and the low light is beautiful, but dress warmly.

How do I book and confirm?

Choose the date on this page and send the request. Our Istanbul team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes and sends the meeting instructions for Kabataş square.
