It is a self-guided visit with no hotel pickup; you collect your entry code at the ticket office of the Hagia Sophia History and Experience Museum beside the building, and a combined ticket with that museum is available on request.

Full Description

Hagia Sophia, fifteen centuries in one building

Hagia Sophia was completed in 537 as the cathedral of the Byzantine Empire, and for almost a thousand years its dome, about 31 metres across and 55 metres above the floor, was the largest in the world. After the Ottoman conquest of 1453 it became the imperial mosque of the city, gaining minarets, a mihrab and a minbar; it served as a museum from 1935 and has been a working mosque again since 2020, with the name Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque. It has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1985.

The building sits at the heart of Sultanahmet between the Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace, a short walk from the Sultanahmet T1 tram stop. Our Istanbul team puts it first on any list of what to see in Istanbul, and because Hagia Sophia tickets now sell with timed entry, a skip-the-line ticket saves the long wait at the kiosks in the square.

What you see on the visitor route: galleries, dome and mosaics

Since 2024 visitors enter through a separate entrance and climb a ramp to the upper galleries, leaving the ground floor to worshippers. From the gallery balustrade you look across the whole nave: the eight enormous calligraphy roundels with the names of God, the Prophet and the first caliphs, the marble columns in green and purple stone, the carpeted prayer floor below and the ring of forty windows under the dome that makes it seem to float.

The galleries hold the finest Byzantine mosaics still visible: the Deësis panel with its gentle faces in gold tesserae, imperial portraits near the east wall and decorative mosaics on the vaults. The augmented-reality experience on your phone recreates how the interior looked in different periods, and the audio commentary explains the mosaics, the dome and the Ottoman additions as you walk. Allow about an hour, more if you linger at the windows for photographs.

Your visit: skip-the-line entry, dress code and opening hours

On the day of your visit, go to the ticket office of the Hagia Sophia History and Experience Museum on Sultanahmet Square between 08:00 and 18:00 and show the code we send you to collect your mosque ticket, then walk to the visitor entrance. The mosque is open to visitors from 08:00 to 19:30 with last admission at 19:00, and it closes to visitors from 12:30 to 14:30 on Fridays for the congregational prayer. Even with a skip-the-line ticket there is a security check, which can be slow when the square is busy.

Hagia Sophia is a mosque, so the dress code is mandatory: shoulders and knees covered for everyone, and a headscarf for women, which is also available at the entrance. Shoes stay on along the visitor route in the galleries. Strollers must be folded and carried, because wheels damage the historic floors, and the route is wheelchair accessible. Bring a charged phone with internet for the AR content; headphones are not provided.

The History and Experience Museum and the rest of Sultanahmet

Next to the mosque, in the restored Ottoman madrasa building, the Hagia Sophia History and Experience Museum tells the story of the site from the Roman city to today with immersive projections and a collection of objects, and its ticket office is where you collect your mosque entry. It opens from 09:00 to 20:00 with last admission at 19:00, and if you would like to add it we arrange the combined ticket on request; many of our guests see the museum first for context and then enter the mosque.

From the square it is two minutes to the Basilica Cistern, five to the Blue Mosque across the gardens and ten to the gates of Topkapi Palace, so this ticket slots easily into a full Sultanahmet day. Visit early in the morning or after 16:00 for the softest light through the dome windows and the shortest security queues.
