Full Description

Into the Taurus Mountains from Alanya

Behind Alanya's beaches, the Taurus Mountains rise steeply to well over 2,000 metres, and within half an hour of the coast the air is fresher and the hills are covered in pine and oak. The road to Sapadere follows the valleys inland, past greenhouses, banana groves and small villages where life still follows the seasons of the harvest.

This is why a Taurus Mountains day trip from Alanya is so popular in summer: temperatures in the canyon and by the river are often several degrees lower than on the coast. The drive takes about 45 minutes in an air-conditioned vehicle, with your guide pointing out the landscape and helping with timing throughout the day. The tour is designed as a relaxed day outdoors rather than an in-depth history tour.

Sapadere Canyon: Walkways, Waterfalls and Pools

Sapadere Canyon lies near the mountain village of the same name, about 45 km northeast of Alanya. Opened to visitors in 2008, it is a narrow limestone gorge where a cold stream has carved pools and cascades between high rock walls. A wooden walkway of several hundred metres runs beside the water, with platforms over the falls and the green, shady sides of the canyon.

The walk is easy and takes around an hour at a gentle pace, ending at the largest waterfall. If the weather allows you can paddle or swim in the natural pools, though the water stays cold even in August. Is Sapadere Canyon worth visiting? On a hot day it is one of the most refreshing places on the Alanya coast. The best time to visit Sapadere Canyon is from May to October, when the walkways are open and the stream runs clear.

Traditional Village and Tropical Fruit Garden

Alanya's mild, sunny climate allows fruit that is rare elsewhere in Turkey to grow. On the way down from the mountains the tour stops in a traditional village, where you see how local families live and farm and walk through a garden of tropical fruit trees such as bananas and avocados, with other varieties depending on the season. Many of the bananas sold in Turkish markets are grown along this stretch of coast between Alanya and Anamur, often in the greenhouses you pass on the road.

Your guide explains how the fruit is grown and harvested, and there is time to taste what is ripe and browse local products made in the village. It is a short, relaxed stop that children enjoy, and a good chance for photos among the orchards with the mountains behind.

Dim Cave: Stalactites above the Valley

Dim Cave opens on the slopes of Cebel-i Reis Mountain, about 12 km east of Alanya and around 230 metres above sea level. It was opened to visitors in the late 1990s and is one of the most visited caves on the Turkish Mediterranean. A lit walkway leads about 400 metres into the mountain through halls of stalactites, stalagmites and columns, ending at a small lake.

Inside, the temperature stays cool all year and the air is humid, so the cave is pleasant in summer. A visit takes about 30 to 45 minutes. The Dim Cave entry fee is not included and is paid at the entrance; if you prefer, you can wait outside on the terrace, which has views over the Dim River valley. The path inside has steps and can be slippery, so wear shoes with grip.

Lunch and Free Time on the Dim River

The Dim River, Dimçay to locals, rises in the Taurus Mountains and flows to the sea just east of Alanya. In its upper valley the river runs cold and clear between wooded slopes, and riverside restaurants have built wooden platforms right over the water, where people sit in the shade with the current running beneath them. It is a favourite summer escape for Alanya families.

Here you enjoy an open buffet lunch by the water; drinks are ordered separately. Afterwards there is free time to swim, cool your feet or relax on the platforms, and the day can turn into friendly water fights. A Dim River lunch from Alanya is the slow, cool finish of the tour before the drive of about 45 minutes back to your hotel.
