The Manavgat River cruise

The Manavgat River runs from the Taurus Mountains to the sea near Side, and the stretch near the town is calm and wide, lined with reed beds, orchards and quiet farmland. Our boat cruises it for two and a half to three hours, so it is a proper trip rather than a short ride. It feels a world away from the beach resorts, which is why a Manavgat river cruise from Alanya is such a popular day out.

The river delta swim

Further along, the boat reaches the delta, where the freshwater of the river meets the salt water of the Mediterranean. The two currents mix and change in colour and temperature, and the area is calm and shallow enough to swim. We stop here for a swim break, so it is one of the most talked-about parts of the trip.

Swimming at the point where river and sea meet is something few places allow. Wear your swimsuit under your clothes and bring a towel. Keep children close and within reach of an adult in the water, as currents can change near the river mouth. If you prefer to stay dry, you can relax on the deck while the others swim.

Manavgat Waterfall

Manavgat Waterfall is a short drive north of the town, and it is known for its width and force rather than its height. Wide sheets of water pour over a low rocky ledge into the river below, with a loud roar and a cool mist rising over the viewing area. Many guests ask whether Manavgat Waterfall is worth visiting, and it is a very easy and enjoyable stop for a hot day.

We make a tea-garden stop beside the falls, where you can sit in the shade, drink a glass of Turkish tea and watch the water. The tea and any snacks are paid for by you. The paths are short and mostly flat, so it suits children and older guests. Take photographs from the viewing area and watch your footing on wet stones.

The Manavgat Grand Bazaar

After the waterfall, the group goes into the centre of Manavgat for free time at the Grand Bazaar, one of the biggest and liveliest markets in the region. Stalls spread in every direction, with spices, textiles, leather goods, jewellery, nuts, sweets and souvenirs, and the sellers call out to passers-by with good humour.

Market days and opening hours can vary, so our guide confirms the arrangements on the day. Bargaining is normal and friendly, and you can ask the guide for advice. Bring small notes or a card for purchases, as these are paid by you, and keep an eye on the meeting time, because the group leaves together for the drive back to Alanya.

Manavgat central mosque (on about half of the departures)

On about half of our departures, the programme includes a visit to the central mosque of Manavgat, a landmark of the town and a place of daily worship for local people. Its quiet courtyard is a peaceful contrast to the busy bazaar nearby, and the guide explains a little about its role in the life of the community.

Visitors are welcome to enter respectfully. Cover your shoulders and knees, take off your shoes at the entrance and keep your voice low.
