Pamukkale Travertines – the “Cotton Castle”

Pamukkale means “cotton castle” in Turkish, and the name fits: a whole hillside is covered in brilliant white terraces, formed over thousands of years as warm, mineral-rich spring water ran down the slope and left thin layers of calcium carbonate behind. The shallow pools hold turquoise water close to body temperature, and the site has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with Hierapolis since 1988.

To protect the surface, everyone walks barefoot on the marked path, so bring a small bag for your shoes. Most guests spend about an hour on the terraces, wading in the pools and taking photos with the Denizli plain spread out below. Is Pamukkale worth visiting on such a long day trip from Alanya? The moment you step onto the white rock in the afternoon light, the answer is clear, and the free time lets you find your own favourite viewpoint.

Hierapolis Ancient City

Above the terraces lie the ruins of Hierapolis, a spa city founded in the 2nd century BC by the kings of Pergamon and rebuilt by the Romans after an earthquake in AD 60. People travelled here for the healing waters, and the city grew rich on wool and textile dyeing. You enter along Frontinus Street through a monumental Roman gate, passing baths, fountains, temples and the remains of shops.

North of the gate stretches one of the largest ancient cemeteries in Anatolia, with sarcophagi, tumuli and house-shaped tombs lining the road. Your guide explains the city's story as you walk and leaves time for photos among the columns. Allow at least an hour and a half for the main sights. The same entrance ticket covers Hierapolis and the travertines; in the default option it is paid at the gate, while the second option includes it.

The Roman Theatre of Hierapolis

The theatre on the hillside is the jewel of Hierapolis. Built in the 2nd century AD and carefully restored, it keeps its tall stage building decorated with marble reliefs of gods and mythological scenes, and its curved rows of seats look straight across the valley to the mountains beyond.

Reaching it takes a short but steep climb on stone paths, and the reward is one of the finest views on the whole site. We suggest about 30 minutes here, more if you love architecture or photography. Your guide points out the way and the meeting time, so you can climb up at your own speed and still have time for the terraces below. Comfortable shoes help on the steps, and in summer a hat and water are essential.

The Antique Pool (Cleopatra's Pool)

In the heart of the site lies the Antique Pool, a natural thermal pool where warm spring water flows over marble columns that fell into it during an ancient earthquake. Swimming above real Roman columns is a rare experience, and the water stays pleasantly warm in every season, which is why many visitors plan their day around it.

Entrance to the Antique Pool is not included in either option and is paid on site if you wish to swim, so bring swimwear and a towel if you plan to go in. Many guests simply watch from the edge and save their time for the terraces and the theatre. Your guide tells you how much time you have, so you can choose between swimming and exploring.

The Road from Alanya to Pamukkale

How to get to Pamukkale from Alanya is the first question most travellers ask, because the distance is long: the route leaves the Mediterranean coast, climbs over the Taurus Mountains and crosses the lakes region of inner Anatolia towards Denizli. That is why the departure is very early, so you reach Pamukkale with plenty of daylight for the visit.

The best time to visit Pamukkale is spring or autumn, when the air is mild and the white terraces are comfortable underfoot; in high summer bring sunglasses and sun cream.
