Sapadere Canyon

Sapadere Canyon lies in the Taurus Mountains about 45 kilometres from Alanya, above the small village of Sapadere. A clear mountain stream has cut a narrow gorge through the limestone, and a wooden path of about 385 metres follows it between towering rock walls. All along the way, small and large waterfalls tumble from both sides, and the air is noticeably cooler than on the coast – a welcome change on hot summer days.

You have around an hour and ten minutes here to walk to the end of the path, feel the spray of the falls and take photos. Brave guests can swim in the ice-cold pools fed by snowmelt. Is Sapadere Canyon worth visiting? For anyone who wants to see the green, wild side of Alanya beyond the beaches, it is the highlight of the day. In the default minibus option the canyon ticket is not included and can be paid on site.

Dim Cave

Dim Cave sits high on the slopes of Cebel-i Reis mountain, about 11 kilometres from Alanya, and was opened to visitors in the late 1990s. A lit path leads several hundred metres deep into the mountain past stalactites, stalagmites and curtain-like formations shaped over millions of years, ending at a small clear pool. Inside, the temperature stays cool all year, so the visit feels refreshing even in July.

This is the well-known Dim Cave, not a smaller unnamed cave, and the visit takes about 45 minutes, including the panoramic terrace in front of the entrance, which overlooks Alanya and the sea from high above. In the default option the cave ticket is not included; you can decide on the day and pay at the entrance if you want to go in. The steps inside can be damp, so shoes with good grip are useful.

Dim River (Dim Çayı)

The Dim River rises in the Taurus Mountains and runs through a green valley of pine forest and banana gardens before reaching the Mediterranean east of Alanya. Its water stays cold even in midsummer, and along the banks restaurants are built on wooden platforms right over the stream, so you can sit with your feet near the water while you eat.

The longest stop of the day, about an hour and three quarters, is here. Lunch is an open buffet with grilled chicken or a vegetarian plate, spaghetti or rice and salad, and the entrance to the river area is included. Afterwards you can swim in the natural pools, try the water slides at the facility, or simply rest in the shade. Many guests also try gözleme, the thin village pancake made by local women. Drinks are paid separately.

The Taurus Mountain Road and Viewpoint

The route itself is part of the experience. Leaving the coast, the road winds up into the Taurus Mountains through villages, terraced banana gardens and pine forest, with a stop at a panoramic viewpoint where you can see the valleys opening towards the sea. On the jeep options, the open-top drive adds a playful water fight along the way.

In the default option you travel in an air-conditioned minibus, protected from sun and dust – the comfortable choice for families with small children. The guide handles all logistics, timing and directions, though this is a nature day rather than a history lesson. The best time to visit Sapadere Canyon is from late spring to early autumn, when the swimming is pleasant; in high summer the cool canyon air is a real relief.
