Full Description

The Underground City of Cappadocia

The Underground City is one of the best-known sights of a Cappadocia tour, a multi-level settlement carved into soft volcanic rock where communities once hid from invaders. Narrow passages lead down past storerooms, kitchens, stables, wells and ventilation shafts, and heavy round stone doors could be rolled across the corridors to seal them off. Entry is included in this tour.

A visit usually takes about an hour with the guide. Wear comfortable shoes, because the passages are low and uneven, and tell the guide if you are uncomfortable in narrow spaces. People often ask whether the underground city is worth visiting; for most guests it is the most memorable stop of the first day, because it explains how people lived in this region.

Uchisar, Pigeon Valley and Avanos

Uchisar is the highest point in the region, a rock fortress riddled with chambers that gives wide views over the valleys and fairy chimneys. From there the route continues to Pigeon Valley, a scenic stretch of cliffs where pigeon houses were carved into the rock to collect droppings for fertiliser. The panoramic stop here is one of the best photo points of the trip.

Avanos sits beside the Kızılırmak, the longest river in Turkey, and has been a pottery town for centuries because of the red clay on its banks. The tour includes a pottery workshop, where you can watch how the local potters shape and fire their work, as well as some time in the town. Lunch is not included, so you can choose a Turkish restaurant stop yourself.

Valley of Love, Devrent Valley and the Valley of the Monks

The Valley of Love is known for tall, narrow rock pillars shaped like towers, and Devrent Valley, sometimes called the Valley of Fantasy, is filled with fairy chimneys that look like animals and figures. These are the landscapes people picture when they search for what to see in Cappadocia, and they are best seen in the late-afternoon light.

The Valley of the Monks adds another style of rock formation, with clusters of cones and caves once used for quiet living and worship. Walking on short paths between the formations gives you the chance to take your own photos, and the guide explains how wind and water carved the rock from volcanic ash over millions of years.

A night in a cave hotel

In the default option you stay one night in a cave hotel or a similar property, where rooms are set into the rock, with arched stone ceilings and thick walls that stay cool in summer and warm in winter. Breakfast and dinner are served at the hotel. Cave hotel stays are a big reason many travellers choose a Cappadocia two-day tour instead of a day trip.

The second option uses a 3-star hotel with the same route and the same meals. Rooms are shared by default; a single room can be arranged for an extra charge, which is paid in addition to the booking. Ask us if you need a particular room arrangement.

Day two: the Three Beauties, Çavuşin and the drive back to Alanya

The second day starts after breakfast at the hotel with a panoramic stop at the Three Beauties, three tall fairy chimneys with cap rocks that stand together beside the road. The group then visits Çavuşin, an old rock village with a church dedicated to St John the Baptist, one of the oldest churches in the region, before a final stop at a local stone centre.

After a lunch stop, the group begins the long drive back to Alanya, with drop-off at your hotel in the evening. A Cappadocia trip from Alanya involves a long drive each way, and the bus has rest stops. A hot air balloon flight is not part of this tour; balloon flights are a separate activity, usually at sunrise and depend on weather.
