Full Description
Karaköy and the Golden Horn, where the evening begins
Karaköy is the old port quarter at the mouth of the Golden Horn, directly below the Galata Tower and across the Galata Bridge from Eminönü and the historic peninsula. Its ferry pier is one of Istanbul's busiest, with boats to Kadıköy and Üsküdar, and the T1 tram stops two minutes away, so reaching the Bosphorus dinner cruise from Karaköy is easy from Sultanahmet, Taksim or the Asian side. The boat waits outside the pier gates at 20:00 and boards until 20:30.
As the boat pulls out, the first view is one of the finest in Istanbul: the Galata Bridge with its lamps, the domes and minarets of the historic peninsula behind it, and the lit tower of Galata above Karaköy. The Golden Horn opens behind you while the boat turns north into the Bosphorus, passing the cruise terminal and the Dolmabahçe shore as the starter plates come out.
Dolmabahçe Palace and the Ortaköy waterfront
The first landmark of the Bosphorus proper is Dolmabahçe Palace, the nineteenth-century residence of the last sultans, whose white facade stretches along the water for more than half a kilometre and is floodlit after dark. The palace mosque, the clock tower and the ceremonial gate opening onto the strait all pass slowly in front of your table, and the host points them out. Çırağan Palace, another imperial residence, appears a few minutes later.
Ortaköy comes next, a small waterfront square with the baroque Ortaköy Mosque sitting at the very edge of the quay. By night the mosque is lit from below and the Bosphorus Bridge rises directly behind it, the classic image of a Bosphorus night cruise in Istanbul. Guests usually step out onto the deck here, as the boat slows for photographs before passing under the bridge.
The Bosphorus Bridge and Beylerbeyi Palace
The 15 July Martyrs Bridge, known to everyone as the Bosphorus Bridge, was the first bridge to join Europe and Asia across the strait when it opened in 1973. At night its towers and cables are illuminated in changing colours, and sailing underneath it with the music playing is one of the moments guests remember most. The lights of Beşiktaş are on the European side and the quiet villages of the Asian shore on the other.
Immediately beyond the bridge on the Asian bank is Beylerbeyi Palace, the marble summer palace of the 1860s where the sultans received foreign royalty, with two small pavilions on the quay and gardens of magnolia behind. Floodlit from the water, it is one of the most elegant sights of the cruise, and the dinner's main course is often served while it slides past your window.
Rumeli Fortress, the second bridge and Anadolu Hisarı
The boat continues up the European shore past the yalı mansions of Arnavutköy and Bebek to Rumeli Fortress, the great castle Sultan Mehmet II raised in 1452 at the narrowest point of the Bosphorus to control the waterway before the conquest of Constantinople. Its three towers and long walls are lit at night and look even more imposing from the water than from the shore road.
Opposite the fortress stands its much older and smaller counterpart, Anadolu Hisarı, the Anatolian Fortress from the 1390s, and between them the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge spans the strait. This is the turning point of the Bosphorus night cruise, about halfway through the evening; the boat swings around under the second bridge and begins the return journey along the Asian shore, and the Turkish night show takes the stage.
The Maiden's Tower and the lights of the historic peninsula
The last sight of the cruise is the Maiden's Tower, standing on a tiny rock off Üsküdar where the Bosphorus meets the Sea of Marmara. It has been a watchtower, a lighthouse and a quarantine station, and its white walls are lit at night with the silhouettes of Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace glowing on the historic peninsula behind. The boat passes close by, so even from your table the view is unobstructed.
From the tower the boat crosses back towards Karaköy and the Golden Horn, with the Galata Tower ahead and the DJ playing the last songs of the evening. The cruise ends about three hours after departure at the Karaköy pier, with drop-off points at Karaköy and near Topkapı, and our driver takes guests on the transfer option back to their hotels.
On board: the Turkish night show and the dinner
A Turkish night is Istanbul's traditional evening entertainment, and on this boat it runs for about ninety minutes: live musicians playing traditional instruments, folk dance groups in the embroidered costumes of different regions of Turkey, and cultural dance performances, with guests invited onto the floor for the final numbers. A DJ follows the show. The boat is a modern vessel with an indoor dining area and an open deck, run with an eco-friendly approach.
Dinner is served at your table: a Turkish starter plate with spicy pepper paste, fava, muhammara, salad, cheeses, haydari, tomato and cucumber, a green salad and a paçanga pastry, then grilled meatballs, spicy chicken skewers or baked seasonal fish, with a vegetarian menu of grilled vegetables with rice or pasta on request, and Turkish dessert or a fruit plate. Soft drinks are unlimited, and halal and pescetarian needs are catered for.
