Full Description

Kabataş pier and the Dolmabahçe shore

Kabataş is the transport knot of the European Bosphorus shore: the T1 tram ends here, the funicular climbs to Taksim Square, and ferries leave for Üsküdar, Kadıköy and the Princes' Islands. The cruise yacht boards a few steps from these terminals, so getting to the Bosphorus cruise from Kabataş is simple from Sultanahmet, Karaköy or Taksim. Arrive fifteen minutes early, download the audio guide while you wait, and settle in the air-conditioned lounge or on the open deck.

The first minutes of the sunset cruise pass the Dolmabahçe Mosque with its twin minarets and then the long marble front of Dolmabahçe Palace, where the late Ottoman sultans lived from 1856. In the low light the facade turns gold, and the audio guide explains the palace's history, the clock tower and the ceremonial gate as you glide past. Çırağan Palace follows a few hundred metres on.

Ortaköy Mosque and the Bosphorus Bridge at sunset

Ortaköy Mosque is the little baroque mosque that sits on the quay right under the first bridge, and at sunset it is at its best, with the sun dropping behind the hills of Beşiktaş and the bridge towers catching the last light. The yacht slows so you can photograph the mosque and the bridge together, then passes beneath the 15 July Martyrs Bridge, which has linked Europe and Asia since 1973.

If you have wondered when is the best time for a Bosphorus cruise, this is the answer many of our Istanbul team give: the sunset departure gives you daylight for the palaces, golden light at Ortaköy and the bridge, and the first city lights on the way back. Departure times move with the sunset through the year, so check the time on your confirmation. Headphones help you hear the audio guide on the breezy deck.

Arnavutköy, Bebek and Rumeli Fortress

Past the bridge the European shore turns residential and elegant. Arnavutköy keeps a row of nineteenth-century wooden waterfront houses, the yalı, pressed right against the water; Bebek follows with its park, its marina and a mosque on the quay. The audio guide tells the story of these Bosphorus villages that once could be reached only by boat.

Then the hillside steepens and the towers of Rumeli Fortress appear, built in 1452 by Sultan Mehmet II in record time to seal the Bosphorus before the conquest of Constantinople. Its three great towers and the walls that zigzag down to the water are the most dramatic sight of the European shore, and the yacht passes close enough to see the battlements clearly. A Bosphorus cruise past Rumeli Fortress is the easiest way to see it, since the fortress sits on the shore road far from the tram lines.

The second bridge, Anadolu Hisarı and Küçüksu Palace

Just beyond Rumeli Fortress the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge spans the narrowest part of the strait, and here the yacht crosses to the Asian side and turns back. Directly below the bridge on the Asian shore stands Anadolu Hisarı, the Anatolian Fortress, a small castle from the 1390s at the mouth of the Göksu stream and the oldest Ottoman building in Istanbul.

A little further south the cruise passes Küçüksu Palace, a compact white hunting and resting pavilion of the 1850s whose carved marble facade and small quay look like a miniature Dolmabahçe. The audio guide covers both, and on the day cruise option this stretch is especially good for photographs, with the Asian hills green behind the pavilion. The return along this shore is calmer than the European side, with fishermen, rowing clubs and old waterfront cafés.

Beylerbeyi Palace and Kuzguncuk

Approaching the first bridge again, this time from the Asian side, the yacht passes Beylerbeyi Palace, the white summer palace built in the 1860s where visiting empresses and kings stayed, with its two little bathing pavilions on the quay and magnolia gardens behind. Floodlit on the night cruise, golden on the sunset cruise, it is one of the best-kept Ottoman palaces and well worth a daytime visit later in your trip.

Right after the palace comes Kuzguncuk, a village of pastel wooden houses, a mosque, churches and a synagogue standing side by side on one street, a reminder of the many communities that have shared the Bosphorus. The audio guide points out the houses, and then the long Üsküdar waterfront opens ahead with the Mihrimah Sultan and Şemsi Pasha mosques near the ferry piers.

The Maiden's Tower and the return to the pier

The Maiden's Tower stands on a rock a couple of hundred metres off Üsküdar, where the Bosphorus opens into the Sea of Marmara. It began as a Byzantine watchtower, served the Ottomans as a lighthouse and quarantine station, and is now a small museum. On the sunset cruise you reach it as the sky turns pink behind the domes of Sultanahmet; on the night cruise it is lit white on black water. It is the classic last photograph of any Bosphorus cruise in Istanbul.

From here the yacht crosses back to Kabataş, or to the Golden Horn pier for those departures, finishing two hours after boarding, or about two hours and forty-five minutes on the Golden Horn night option. The lounge serves soft drinks, tea and coffee until the end, and the pier is a short walk from the tram and funicular for your onward journey.
