Full Description
Hot Air Balloon Flight over Pamukkale
Balloon flights at Pamukkale take off at dawn from fields near the travertines, when the air is still and cool. As the balloon rises, the sun appears over the mountains of the Denizli valley and lights up the white terraces, the pools and the ruins of Hierapolis below you. The flight usually lasts around 45 to 60 minutes, depending on the wind, and the pilot gently changes height so you see the site from many angles.
Many travellers ask whether a Pamukkale balloon ride is worth it. Seen from above, the scale of the white cliff and the pattern of the pools are simply breathtaking, and the morning sky is often filled with other colourful balloons. After landing you receive a flight certificate. Flights depend on the weather and are confirmed by the pilots on the morning itself.
The Pamukkale Travertine Terraces
Pamukkale means 'cotton castle' in Turkish. For thousands of years, warm spring water rich in calcium has flowed down the hillside and left white layers of calcium carbonate that form terraces and shallow pools. The result is a dazzling white slope about 160 metres high, listed together with Hierapolis as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988.
Shoes are not allowed on the travertines, so you walk barefoot along a path where warm water runs over the smooth rock and fills the pools at your feet. Your guide explains how the terraces form and how they are protected today. This part of the Pamukkale day trip from Antalya is the one everyone remembers: blue water, white stone and wide views over the plain.
Hierapolis Ancient City
On the plateau above the travertines lie the ruins of Hierapolis, founded in the 2nd century BC and later a wealthy Roman spa city where visitors came for the healing waters. Your guide leads you through its main monuments, including the monumental city gate and colonnaded main street, the remains of temples and baths, and one of the largest ancient cemeteries in Anatolia, with tombs scattered among the trees.
The highlight is the Roman theatre on the hillside, with its tiers of seats and finely carved stage building facing the valley. A Hierapolis tour from Antalya combined with the travertines gives you about two to three hours on the site in total. The entrance fee to Pamukkale and Hierapolis is not included and is paid at the gate.
The Antique Pool
Inside the archaeological site is the Antique Pool, also known as Cleopatra's Pool, a natural thermal spring where you can swim among fallen marble columns from an ancient portico. The water stays warm all year at around 36°C and is so clear that you can see every column on the bottom.
Swimming here is optional and has its own entrance fee, paid on site, so bring swimwear if you would like to try it. Changing rooms and lockers are available beside the pool. Even if you do not swim, it is worth a short look from the terrace café, where you can watch the water bubble up from the spring between the columns before you head to lunch.
The Journey from Antalya and Lunch
Pamukkale lies about 240 kilometres north of Antalya, roughly a three-and-a-half to four-hour drive through the Taurus mountains and the lake country around Burdur. That is why the pickup is around 03:00: it brings you to Pamukkale in time for the sunrise flight. You travel in a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle, so you can sleep on the way there.
After the guided visit there is a lunch break in the Pamukkale area, included in the tour, before the drive back to Antalya in the afternoon. As in most of Türkiye, the meat served is generally halal. The best time to visit Pamukkale is spring and autumn, when the terraces are comfortable for walking barefoot and the morning skies are often clear for ballooning.
