The Manavgat River cruise

The Manavgat River rises in the Taurus Mountains and flows through banana and citrus groves before reaching the Mediterranean east of Side. Its water has a striking green colour, and the slow river boats glide past reed beds, fishermen's huts, herons and kingfishers on their way downstream.

Is a Manavgat river cruise worth it? It is one of the most relaxing ways to see this part of the coast, with nothing to do but sit on deck and watch the banks drift by. The boat programme lasts about two and a half to three hours, including stops for swimming and a lunch served on board. Drinks are available to buy from the crew, so bring some cash.

Where the river meets the sea

Downstream the river widens and approaches the coast, where a sandy strip separates the calm fresh water from the open Mediterranean. Many boats stop near the river mouth so that guests can step ashore, swim in the sea on one side and in the river on the other, an unusual experience that children especially enjoy.

The exact swim points depend on the river level and the season, and the crew chooses the safest spots. Bring swimwear, a towel and sunscreen, as there is little shade on the sand. After the break the boat heads back upriver towards Manavgat town, with time to dry off on deck while lunch is served.

Manavgat Waterfall

The Manavgat Waterfall lies a few kilometres north of the town, where the whole width of the river pours over a low, broad ledge of rock in a curtain of white water. It is not tall, but its width and the constant roar make it impressive, especially in spring when the river is full. Shady walkways and terraces run along the bank, and the mist keeps the air fresh.

Your entrance fee is included, and around 45 minutes is enough to walk the viewing platforms and take photos. The best time to visit Manavgat Waterfall is in the morning or late afternoon, when it is less crowded. Around the entrance you will find small shops and tea gardens if you would like to sit by the water.

Manavgat bazaar

Manavgat is the market town of this stretch of coast, and its bazaar is a lively place to shop for fruit, spices, Turkish delight, textiles, leather goods and souvenirs. The tour gives you about two hours of free time here, so you can wander at your own pace, compare stalls and try local snacks such as gözleme, fresh juice or simit.

Bargaining is common at market stalls, so take your time and ask about prices before buying. Shopping and personal expenses are not included. Our guide will tell you the meeting point and time for the return, and can suggest where to find good dried fruit, nuts and local products to take with you.

Manavgat day trip from Antalya

Manavgat is about an hour and a half by road east of Antalya and a little closer to Alanya, which makes it an easy full-day excursion from either city. The route follows the coast past Belek and the ancient site of Side, with the Taurus Mountains rising inland and greenhouses and orchards lining the road.
