Overview

In this one-hour perfume creation workshop in the old centre of Nice, a perfume expert from a historic Riviera perfume house guides you through the architecture of a fragrance: top notes, heart notes and base notes. You then compose your own perfume from a palette of 90 essences and fill a 50 ml bottle that is yours to keep, with a numbered certificate that lets you reorder the same formula later. Workshops are held in small shared groups in French and/or English, and only registered participants can attend. The boutique on Rue Saint-François-de-Paule is a few steps from the Cours Saleya flower market. It suits couples, friends and families with children from 9 years, and makes a perfect rainy-day plan or a lasting souvenir of the Riviera.

Full Description

A perfume boutique in the heart of Old Nice

The workshop takes place in the Nice boutique of a perfume house founded in nearby Grasse in the 19th century, set on Rue Saint-François-de-Paule, the elegant street that links the Opera of Nice with the Cours Saleya. The tall Italianate facades, painted in warm ochre and red, are a reminder that Nice belonged to the House of Savoy until 1860, and the boutique itself is a pleasure to visit, with its shelves of fragrances.

Arrive a few minutes early to enjoy the street: the Cours Saleya flower and produce market fills the square behind it most mornings except Monday, and the Promenade des Anglais and the sea are a short walk away. If you are looking for a perfume workshop in Nice that fits easily into a day in the Old Town, this location is ideal.

Grasse and the perfume heritage of the Riviera

Only about 40 kilometres from Nice, Grasse has been the perfume capital of the world since the 17th century, when its glove makers began scenting leather. Its fields of jasmine, May rose and tuberose still supply the finest houses, and in 2018 the perfume know-how of the Pays de Grasse was added to the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

This workshop brings that heritage to Nice. Your expert explains how a perfumer, often called a nose, builds a fragrance like a piece of music, and how natural materials and modern molecules work together. It is a good way to understand the Riviera's scent tradition if you do not have time for a day trip to Grasse.

The workshop: composing your fragrance

After a short introduction, you learn the three levels of the olfactory pyramid. Top notes such as citrus are the first impression and fade within minutes; heart notes such as flowers and spices form the character of the perfume; base notes such as woods, musk, vanilla and amber give depth and make it last on the skin.

You then smell essences on paper strips, choose your favourites from the 90 available and measure them into your formula with the expert's advice. There is no right or wrong answer: some guests create a fresh citrus cologne, others a deep woody or oriental blend. The session lasts about one hour, and groups are shared, so the pace is relaxed and questions are welcome.

Your 50 ml bottle and lifetime certificate

At the end of the workshop your perfume is bottled in a 50 ml flacon that you take away with you, together with a numbered certificate. The formula is kept by the perfume house, so you can order your own creation again at any time in the future, a lovely gift idea for yourself or someone special. Many guests like to give their creation a name, and the certificate makes it easy to find the formula again on a future visit to the Riviera.

Purchases in the boutique are not included, but you are free to browse after the workshop. Perfume bottles over 100 ml cannot go in cabin baggage on most flights; your 50 ml bottle is fine in a clear liquids bag.
