Full Description
The Old Port and the towers of La Rochelle
Few harbours in France are as photogenic as the Old Port of La Rochelle. The quays are lined with arcaded streets and the Big Clock gate that leads into the old town, while the Saint-Nicolas Tower and the Chain Tower stand guard at the harbour mouth. For centuries La Rochelle was a free merchant city and a Protestant stronghold, and its resistance during the long siege of 1627 and 1628 is still part of local pride.
Your guided trip boards at Cours des Dames, right in front of the towers, so the first minutes of the cruise are a lesson in the town's past as the guide explains how the great chain closed the port at night. If you are looking for a La Rochelle Old Port boat trip with English commentary, this is the one that starts in the most central spot.
The coastline towards Île de Ré and Île d'Oléron
Leaving the harbour, the boat follows the coast of La Rochelle with its beaches, old forts and the long modern seafront, while the islands frame the horizon. To the north, the bridge to Île de Ré curves across the sea for almost 3 kilometres, and the island's low, sunny coast is dotted with salt marshes and white villages. To the south, Île d'Oléron stretches away with its pine forests, oyster beds and lighthouse.
These waters, sheltered by the islands, have long been some of the busiest on the French Atlantic coast, with fishing boats, ferries and yachts crossing between the harbours. The commentary explains how the islands protected the coast and why so many forts were built here. Bring a jacket, as the breeze picks up as soon as you are out of the harbour.
The coast of Île d'Aix
Île d'Aix is a small, crescent-shaped island at the mouth of the Charente, closed to cars and covered with pine woods, beaches and old fortifications. The boat sails along its coast so you can see the village behind its ramparts, Fort Liédot on the eastern side and the lighthouse with its twin white towers.
The island was a key part of the defences that protected the naval arsenal of Rochefort, upriver on the Charente, together with Fort Boyard and Fort Énet. Seen from the water, it looks like a quiet holiday island, yet almost every headland carries a battery or a wall. Many visitors on a Fort Boyard and Île d'Aix cruise decide to come back another day to spend a few hours on the island itself.
Fort Boyard photo stop
Fort Boyard is one of the most recognisable sights of the Atlantic coast: a huge oval of stone rising from the sea, about 68 metres long and 31 metres wide, built on a sandbank between Île d'Aix and Île d'Oléron. Construction began in 1804, but the foundations kept sinking into the sand and work was paused for years; the fort was only completed in 1857, by which time new artillery made it unnecessary.
The boat slows down alongside the fort for a photo stop, close enough to see the gun ports, the small harbour and the stonework. Landing is not possible, as the fort is closed to visitors. Is a Fort Boyard boat trip worth it? For the guide's stories and this close-up view, most travellers say yes, and the best time to go is between April and October.
