Full Description
The Verdon Gorge, Europe's great canyon
The Gorges du Verdon cut through the limestone of Haute-Provence for about 25 kilometres, with cliffs that drop up to 700 metres to the river below. Often called the Grand Canyon of Europe, the gorge is the centrepiece of the Verdon Regional Natural Park and a paradise for climbers, kayakers and hikers.
What makes it unforgettable is the colour of the water, a vivid emerald and turquoise caused by minerals and microalgae in the river. On a Verdon Gorge day trip from Nice, the viewpoints along the canyon rim let you see the river winding far below, with vultures often circling overhead.
Lake Sainte-Croix and the canyon viewpoints
At the western end of the gorge, the Verdon flows into Lake Sainte-Croix, a large reservoir created in the 1970s whose milky turquoise water looks almost tropical. The bridge at the mouth of the canyon is a classic photo spot, with pedal boats and kayaks heading into the cliffs.
Our driver chooses the best viewpoints of the day depending on weather and traffic, so you can enjoy the scenery without long hikes. Is the Verdon Gorge worth visiting from Nice? For anyone who loves landscapes, yes: few places in France combine such height, colour and silence.
The lavender fields of Valensole
The Valensole plateau is the most photographed lavender landscape in Provence. In early summer, endless rows of purple stretch to the horizon, broken by stone farmhouses, lone trees and fields of golden wheat. The scent is strongest on warm afternoons, when bees fill the rows.
Lavender fields in bloom are usually seen from about mid-June to mid-July; the harvest then starts, and the timing shifts a little each year with the weather. Outside that season, the plateau is still pretty but green or harvested. The best time for a lavender tour from Nice is late June to early July.
Planning your day in Provence
The trip is a full day, with around two and a half hours of driving each way through the hills behind the Riviera. The drive itself is scenic, climbing from the coast through villages and pine forests into the high plateaux of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence.
Please respect the farms by staying on the edges of the lavender rows and never picking the flowers. Wear light clothes and a hat, as summer heat on the plateau can be strong, and bring water. Lunch is not included, but there is time to buy food on the way.
