Overview

This small-group walking tour links the great sights of ancient Athens with the myths that explain them. Meeting under Hadrian's Arch, a certified English-speaking guide shows you the Temple of Olympian Zeus from outside, then leads you up the Acropolis past the Theatre of Dionysus and the Sanctuary of Asclepius to the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheion and the Parthenon. In the default 4-hour option the walk continues down to the Ancient Agora, the civic heart of the classical city, and the Temple of Hephaestus, the best-preserved temple in Greece, with pre-booked entry tickets to both sites. Groups are kept small, which makes it easy to ask questions, and the stories suit curious teenagers and adults alike. Shorter 2-hour options and options without tickets are also available.

Full Description

Hadrian's Arch and the Temple of Olympian Zeus

The walk begins under Hadrian's Arch, a marble gateway raised around AD 131 on the road between the old Greek city and the new Roman quarter. Its two inscriptions, one on each side, announce where the city of Theseus ended and the city of Hadrian began, a neat introduction to how myth and history are tangled in Athens. Your guide holds a sign so you find the group easily.

Just behind the arch stand the giant columns of the Temple of Olympian Zeus, seen from outside on this tour. Work began in the 6th century BC but the temple was completed only in the Roman era, more than six centuries later, when it became one of the largest temples of the ancient world. Fifteen Corinthian columns still stand, with a sixteenth lying where a storm toppled it in 1852. Your guide tells the story of Zeus, king of the gods, and his place in Athenian belief.

The South Slope: Theatre of Dionysus and Sanctuary of Asclepius

Entering the Acropolis from the south, you reach the Theatre of Dionysus, the cradle of Greek drama, where tragedies and comedies were first staged in the 5th century BC before thousands of spectators. Dionysus, son of Zeus and god of theatre and festivity, was honoured here every spring with a great festival, and your guide explains how the myths of his travels became the stuff of plays.

A little higher lies the Sanctuary of Asclepius, the god of medicine who, according to myth, could even bring the dead back to life. Sick Athenians slept in its halls hoping for healing dreams, and the sacred spring still flows in a small cave nearby. These quieter ruins, often missed on a quick visit, show how religion touched everyday life, and they make the climb to the summit feel like a journey through the beliefs of the ancient city.

The Temple of Athena Nike and the Erechtheion

Through the Propylaea gateway you reach the little Temple of Athena Nike on its bastion. Myth says that from this spot King Aegeus watched for the return of his son Theseus from Crete; seeing black sails by mistake, he threw himself into the sea, which has carried his name ever since. Your guide tells the tale where it is said to have happened, with the real sea visible on the horizon.

On the north side stands the Erechtheion, built between 421 and 406 BC on the most sacred ground of the rock. Here, the story goes, Poseidon struck the stone with his trident to offer a salt spring, while Athena gave an olive tree, and the citizens chose her gift. The olive tree growing there today keeps the legend alive, and the six maidens of the Porch of the Caryatids watch over the scene.

The Parthenon: Athena's Temple

The Parthenon, finished in 432 BC, housed a towering gold and ivory statue of Athena Parthenos, the virgin goddess who protected the city. Its pediments once showed two great myths: on the east, the birth of Athena springing fully armed from the head of Zeus, and on the west, her contest with Poseidon. Your guide helps you picture the painted sculptures where today only the marble frame remains.

This Acropolis mythology tour also explains the history behind the legends: how Athens grew into a naval power, built this temple in its Golden Age and later fell to the Spartan armies. The Parthenon stop lasts about 30 minutes, with time for photos and the wide view over the city to the hills and the sea. It is the moment when the myths and the historical facts finally come together.

The Ancient Agora of Athens

Coming down from the rock, the 4-hour option enters the Ancient Agora, the marketplace and civic centre where Athenians shopped, voted, argued and held trials. The Panathenaic Way, the processional road leading up to the Acropolis, cuts straight through it. Your guide brings the open ground to life by placing the council house, the law courts and the long stoas where philosophers taught and traders did business.

The reconstructed Stoa of Attalos, rebuilt in the 1950s on its original foundations, gives a clear idea of how a covered colonnade looked when new, and today it houses the Agora Museum with everyday objects from the ancient city, including ballots and pottery. An Ancient Agora tour adds a human scale to the grandeur of the Acropolis and shows where democracy was practised day to day.

The Temple of Hephaestus

Above the Agora, on the low hill of Agoraios Kolonos, stands the Temple of Hephaestus, built around 449 to 415 BC and the best-preserved ancient Greek temple anywhere. It was dedicated to Hephaestus, god of fire and metalwork, and to Athena as patron of crafts, because the workshops of bronze-smiths and potters surrounded it. Its roof and columns are intact because it served as a church until the 19th century.

Your guide ends the tour here with the myths of Hephaestus, the lame smith of the gods who forged weapons for heroes, and with the carved scenes of Theseus and Heracles still visible on the friezes. The shaded gardens around the temple are a pleasant place to rest after four hours on your feet, and Thissio and Monastiraki metro stations are each a short walk away.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private experience?

It is a shared tour kept to a small group, led by a certified English-speaking guide, so everyone can hear clearly and ask questions.

How long does it take?

The default option lasts about 4 hours, covering the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora and the Temple of Hephaestus. The 2-hour options cover the Temple of Olympian Zeus from outside and the Acropolis only.

Is hotel pickup included?

No. The tour starts under Hadrian's Arch, a 5-minute walk from Acropolis metro station, and ends in the Ancient Agora near Thissio and Monastiraki stations.

What is included?

Pre-booked entry tickets to the Acropolis and the Ancient Agora, a certified English-speaking guide, a small group, stories of Greek mythology linked to historic facts and an ancient Athens city map. Food, drinks and hotel transfers are not included.

Is the price per person or per group?

The price is per person, with a reduced rate for ages 6 to 17. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.

Is it suitable for children or travellers with reduced mobility?

Children from 6 years old enjoy the myths, which bring the ruins to life. The route involves steep climbs and uneven paths for about 4 hours, so it is not suitable for wheelchair users or travellers with limited mobility, and strollers are not allowed.

Why combine the Acropolis with the Ancient Agora?

The Acropolis shows the religious and artistic peak of Athens, while the Ancient Agora shows where ordinary citizens lived, traded and voted. Seeing both on the same morning gives a complete picture of the classical city.

Do I need to know Greek mythology before the tour?

Not at all. Your guide tells each myth from the beginning at the place it belongs to, and explains the historic facts behind it.

What should I bring?

Your passport or ID card, comfortable shoes, water, a hat and sunscreen. Leave backpacks and large bags at your hotel, as they are not allowed at the Acropolis.

What is the best time of day or season?

The 08:30 start is the best time of day, before the heat and the biggest crowds. Spring and autumn are ideal; in summer the early start makes the walk comfortable.

What happens in bad weather?

The tour runs in light rain, so bring a rain jacket and shoes with good grip. If the authorities close the sites because of storms or extreme heat, our team contacts you to discuss your options.
