Full Description
Piraeus Port and the high-speed ferry to Hydra
Your day starts at Piraeus, the great port of Athens and the gateway to the Saronic islands. Our host meets you at the ferry ticket offices by Gate E8, helps with check-in and boarding, and collects the mandatory sea transfer supplement, which is paid on the spot before departure. The easiest way to get there is the metro to Dimotiko Theatro station or a taxi to Gate E9.
The high-speed ferry crosses the calm Argo-Saronic waters in about an hour and a half, passing the coast of the Peloponnese and smaller islands on the way. Inside there is comfortable seating and onboard facilities, while the outside deck is the best spot to watch Hydra's harbour come into view. Because the crossing is fast, the Athens to Hydra ferry leaves you far more time on the island than a classic multi-island cruise.
Hydra Town: guided walk through the harbour and stone lanes
Hydra Town rises like an amphitheatre around a horseshoe-shaped harbour, with grey-stone mansions and whitewashed houses climbing the bare hillside. No cars or motorbikes are allowed on the island, so the lanes belong to walkers, donkeys and mules, and water taxis link the harbour with the coves. This calm, unchanged look is why so many people ask whether Hydra is worth visiting on a day trip from Athens — and the answer is yes.
On the one-hour guided walk you follow narrow stepped alleys and jasmine-scented courtyards, see the stone mansions built by wealthy shipowners in the 18th and 19th centuries, and pass the harbourside monastery church with its marble bell tower. Your host explains how Hydra's ships formed a key part of the Greek fleet during the War of Independence of 1821, and shows you where to taste amygdalota, the island's traditional almond sweets.
Spilia: swimming from the rocks by the harbour
Hydra has no long sandy beach in town, but it has something many travellers love more: Spilia, a set of flat rock terraces just west of the harbour, below the old cannon battery. Metal ladders lead straight into deep, crystal-clear water, and the swim comes with a view of the whole town and the passing boats.
Spilia is a five-minute walk from the end of the guided tour, so it is the easiest place to swim in Hydra on a day trip. Bring swimwear, a towel and water shoes if you have them, as the rocks can be hot and uneven. Swimming always depends on the weather and sea conditions on the day, and our host will tell you if the sea is too rough.
Vlichos Beach and the coastal path to Kamini
If you prefer a beach, Vlichos lies on the west coast of the island, past the small fishing hamlet of Kamini. It is a pebble beach with very clear water, a few seaside tavernas and a quieter atmosphere than the harbour, which makes it one of the best beaches in Hydra for a relaxed afternoon.
You can reach Vlichos on foot along the scenic coastal path in around half an hour, or by the optional transfer arranged locally at extra cost. Sunbeds and umbrellas are also rented separately. With six hours on Hydra, you can comfortably combine the guided walk, lunch by the sea and a long swim at Vlichos before walking back to the port in time for the return ferry.
Free time in Hydra: lunch, shops and harbour views
After the walk the day is yours. The waterfront is lined with small cafés and seafood tavernas where you can sit and watch the fishing boats and water taxis, and the lanes behind hide jewellery workshops, art galleries and shops selling local sweets and handmade crafts.
For a viewpoint, climb the stepped lanes above town for a wide look over the harbour, or walk east along the coast for sunset-coloured rocks and sea views. Many visitors simply choose a shaded table by the water and enjoy the slow island rhythm. At the end of the afternoon you board the high-speed ferry back to Piraeus, arriving in Athens in the evening.

How long does it take?
About 10 hours in total: around 1.5 hours on the ferry each way and six hours on Hydra, including the one-hour guided walk.

Is the price per person or per group?
The price is per person, with a reduced rate for children. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.
Is it suitable for children or people with reduced mobility?
Children enjoy the ferry and the swim, and children from 3 to 12 have their own rate. The trip is not suitable for wheelchair users or people with mobility impairments, because Hydra Town is built on steep steps and has no cars.
Are there cars on Hydra?
No. Hydra bans cars and motorbikes, so people walk, ride donkeys or use water taxis. This is a large part of the island's charm.

From May to October the sea is warm enough for swimming. June and September are ideal, with warm water and fewer crowds than July and August.
What happens in bad weather?
Ferry operations depend on sea conditions. If the ferry is cancelled, we offer you another date or a full refund; on windy days swimming may not be possible.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose your date and the number of travellers in the booking panel. Our team confirms your booking on WhatsApp within minutes and sends you the meeting details.
