Full Description
The Temple of Poseidon at Sounion
Built around 444 to 440 BC, in the same golden age as the Parthenon, the Temple of Poseidon crowns a 60-metre cliff at the tip of the Attica peninsula. Its slender Doric columns of local white marble were a landmark for ancient sailors, who knew they were close to Athens when they saw it.
Visitors can walk around the temple and see the remains of the propylon and stoa. Look for the name of Lord Byron, carved into one column during his visit in 1810. Entry to the archaeological site is not included in this tour and is bought at the gate; our guide on board prepares you with the story of the sanctuary.
Sunset at Cape Sounion
Cape Sounion is one of the best sunset spots in Greece. As the sun sinks into the sea behind the islands of Kea and Makronisos, the columns turn gold and then pink. Legend says King Aegeus threw himself from this cliff when he saw black sails on his son Theseus's ship, giving the Aegean Sea its name.
Our timing is planned so you arrive in the late afternoon and have time to find a good viewpoint before sunset. The best time to visit Sounion is from April to October, but winter sunsets, with fewer visitors, are just as beautiful.
The Athens Riviera Drive
The road from Athens to Sounion, about 70 kilometres long, runs along the Saronic Gulf through Glyfada, Vouliagmeni and Varkiza, with sandy bays and clear water along the way. This stretch is often called the Apollo Coast.
From the bus windows you enjoy some of the most beautiful coastal scenery near the capital, while our archaeologist guide tells stories of ancient Attica. A Cape Sounion day trip from Athens by public bus is possible but slow, so a guided trip is the easiest way to be there on time for sunset.
