Full Description
The Acropolis of Athens
Rising 156 metres above the city, the Acropolis has been a fortress and sanctuary for more than 3,000 years. Its golden age came in the 5th century BC under Pericles, when Athens built the marble monuments that still define Western architecture. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987.
On this Acropolis guided tour you climb the south slope, stopping at the Theatre of Dionysus, where the plays of Sophocles and Euripides were first performed, and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, still used for summer concerts. You then enter the sacred rock through the Propylaea, the monumental gateway, with the small Temple of Athena Nike on your right.
The Parthenon and the Erechtheion
Built between 447 and 432 BC and dedicated to Athena, the Parthenon is the masterpiece of classical Greece. Its architects Ictinus and Callicrates used subtle curves and tilted columns so the building looks perfectly straight from below, while Phidias oversaw its sculptures.
Opposite stands the Erechtheion, an elegant temple linked to Athena and Poseidon, whose Porch of the Caryatids is held up by six maiden statues (the ones on site are copies). Our guide explains the myths, the history of damage and restoration, and the best photo angles over Athens. The best time to visit the Acropolis is early morning or late afternoon, when it is cooler and less crowded.
The Acropolis Museum
Opened in 2009 at the foot of the hill, the Acropolis Museum is a light-filled building designed by Bernard Tschumi with Michael Photiadis. Glass floors reveal an ancient neighbourhood excavated beneath it, and the collections follow the path from the slopes to the summit.
Highlights include the Archaic gallery with smiling korai statues, five original Caryatids from the Erechtheion and the top-floor Parthenon Gallery, which displays the frieze in its original arrangement with views of the temple itself. Acropolis Museum tickets are included in the default option, and our guide leads you through the key rooms in about 90 minutes.
Practical Tips for Visiting the Acropolis
The paths on the Acropolis are made of polished marble and uneven rock, so shoes with good grip are essential. There is very little shade, so in summer bring a hat, sunscreen and water.
Acropolis opening hours change by season, with longer hours in summer, and there is no separate fast-track entrance: timed tickets help control the queues. Large bags and strollers are not allowed on the hill. If you choose an option without tickets, buy them online in advance for the right time slot. Allow a little extra time at the entrance, where bags are checked by security staff.
