Full Description
Red Beach
Red Beach lies on the south coast of Santorini near the ancient site of Akrotiri, enclosed by towering cliffs of red and black volcanic rock that drop into deep blue water. The colours come from iron-rich lava and ash laid down by the island's eruptions, and they glow most strongly in the afternoon light, which is exactly when this tour arrives.
Because of the risk of falling rocks, access down to the sand is often restricted, so the visit focuses on the viewpoint above the beach, a short walk of about ten minutes on a rough path. Your guide explains how the volcano shaped Santorini. Is Red Beach worth visiting? For the view and the photographs, absolutely; wear sturdy shoes, as the path is uneven.
Akrotiri Lighthouse
Akrotiri Lighthouse stands on the south-western tip of Santorini, on a headland that closes the caldera from the south. Built in the late 19th century, the white stone tower still guides ships into the flooded crater. From the cliff edge you see the full curve of the caldera, the volcanic islands in the middle and the villages strung along the rim like snow on the cliffs.
The stop lasts about 15 minutes, with time for photos and the guide's story of the lighthouse and the volcano. After the lighthouse there is a short break of about 15 minutes at a traditional bakery for a snack, a coffee or a restroom stop. On the way north, the van passes below the medieval hilltop village of Pyrgos for a scenic view of its houses and churches.
Profitis Ilias Monastery
Profitis Ilias Monastery stands at about 565 metres on the highest peak of Santorini. Founded in the early 18th century, it became one of the most important religious and cultural centres of the island, and its thick white walls and bell tower can be seen from far away. From its terrace the view sweeps over the whole island, the caldera, the beaches of the east coast and, on clear days, neighbouring islands such as Anafi and Ios.
You spend about 25 minutes here. As it is an active monastery, shoulders and knees should be covered when entering the grounds; a light scarf is enough. The peak also hosts communication installations, so some areas are off limits, but the views from the monastery terrace are open and are among the best on any Santorini tour.
The Three Bells of Fira
The Three Bells of Fira is the name visitors give to a Catholic church with bright blue domes and a bell tower holding three bells, perched on the caldera edge between Fira and Firostefani. With the cliffs and the sea far below, it is one of the most recognised images of Santorini and a favourite for postcard photographs.
The stop lasts about ten minutes, and your guide will gladly take a classic photo of you with the domes behind. Fira, the island's capital, sprawls along the cliff just to the south. If you are staying in Fira and wonder how to get to Oia for the sunset without the crowded buses, this tour solves it with a comfortable van ride of about 25 minutes.
Oia and the sunset
Oia sits on the northern tip of Santorini, a village of white cave houses, blue domes and old captains' mansions cut into the caldera cliff. At the end of the village, the ruins of a Byzantine castle look west over the sea, and this is the classic place to watch the sun go down. The tour arrives about 45 minutes before sunset and gives you about an hour of free time.
Use the time to walk the main marble lane, browse small galleries or find your own spot along the caldera wall. The best time to visit Oia for sunset is late spring or early autumn, when the light is soft and the crowds are a little smaller; in summer the castle fills up early, so your guide suggests quieter viewpoints. After sunset the van takes you back to your hotel.
