Full Description
The Greek Wedding Show in Fira
The show takes place in an open-air venue on Erithrou Stavrou street in Fira, the lively capital of Santorini, a few minutes' walk from the caldera edge. Instead of a classic stage performance, the evening is built around a Greek village wedding: the families, the couple and their friends arrive, the musicians strike up, and the audience is welcomed as if they were part of the celebration.
Over about two hours the cast tells the story of the wedding through songs, dances and comic moments, often pulling guests from the tables to join in. You do not need any dance experience, and nobody is forced to take part; you can simply watch, clap along and enjoy the atmosphere. It is one of the most popular things to do in Santorini at night.
Greek wedding traditions, music and plate smashing
Weddings in Greece are famous for their energy, with music and dancing that can last until dawn. The show presents these customs with live music played on the bouzouki and other traditional instruments, and with dances from across the country, from the slow, elegant syrtos to the circle dance kalamatianos, in which everyone holds hands and moves together around the floor.
The highlight for many guests is the plate smashing. In Greek tradition, breaking plates during a celebration expresses joy and exuberance, the feeling Greeks call kefi, and it is believed to chase away bad luck. During the show you get your own plates to throw on cue with the cast, a noisy and very happy moment that everyone remembers.
Your table on the top mezzanine and the meze
Your ticket gives you a table on the third level of the venue, the top mezzanine, which looks down over the whole performance area. Seats are assigned by the box office on the day, so the exact table is not known in advance; arriving a little early gives you time to settle in before the music starts at 20:00.
At the table you are served Greek meze-style snacks, small bites typical of a Greek celebration, together with bottled water. This is not a restaurant and not a full dinner, so have a proper meal before the show or plan dinner in Fira afterwards. Soft drinks are not included but can be bought on site, and tips are at your discretion.
Fira by night and how to get there
Fira sits on the rim of the caldera, the huge flooded crater left by the volcanic eruption that shaped Santorini about 3,600 years ago. Before the show you can walk the caldera path for views over the cliffs and the volcanic islands, visit the Museum of Prehistoric Thera with finds from Akrotiri, or see the white Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral in the town centre.
Fira is also the main transport hub of the island, so it is easy to reach: public buses from most villages and beaches end at the central bus station, a short walk from the venue, and taxis are available although they can be busy in summer. Hotel pickup is not included, so plan your return to your hotel in advance.
