You see all six active monasteries from the best viewpoints and step inside one of them, walk a short path to the Badovas hermit caves, and visit the Byzantine church of the Virgin Mary in the old quarter of Kalambaka. Full Description
The rocks of Meteora, a UNESCO landscape
Meteora means suspended in the air, and the name fits. Around 60 million years ago rivers carried sand, pebbles and stones into a sea delta here; later uplift, water, wind and earthquakes carved the hardened conglomerate into giant pillars that rise up to about 400 m above the Thessaly plain. In 1988 UNESCO listed Meteora for both its natural beauty and its monasteries.
On the drive up from Kalambaka the guide explains the geology and the legends locals still tell about these stones. The late-afternoon light brings out their texture, with dark streaks of water and moss on grey rock. If you have been asking yourself whether Meteora is worth visiting for just one evening, this first viewpoint usually answers the question.
Badovas hermit caves above Kastraki
Long before the first monastery was built, hermits lived alone in caves high in the cliffs above Kastraki, climbing up on ladders and ropes that they pulled up behind them. The hermitages of Badovas are among the best known: small cells and the remains of a chapel tucked into a vertical rock face, where traces of old frescoes and wooden beams survive.
A short walk on a rocky, uneven path brings you close below the caves, and the guide tells why monks chose such a hard life and how they survived winter in the rocks. Allow about 20 to 30 minutes for this stop. It is the moment many guests remember most, because it shows the human side of Meteora before the great monasteries.
Byzantine church of the Virgin Mary in Kalambaka
In the old upper quarter of Kalambaka stands the church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, a three-aisled Byzantine basilica of the 11th to 12th centuries. Local tradition says it was built on the site of an ancient temple of Apollo, and reused ancient stones can be seen in its walls. Inside, a rare marble pulpit stands in the middle of the nave, surrounded by 16th-century frescoes.
A small entrance fee is paid in cash at the door, and the visit lasts about 15 to 20 minutes. Around the church, narrow lanes with stone houses and flowering courtyards show what Kalambaka looked like before modern hotels arrived. It is a calm stop before the drive up into the rocks.
Your monastery visit and the six monasteries
On most days the monastery you enter is St. Stephen, a convent reached by a short bridge with no stairs, with a carved wooden iconostasis and a balcony above Kalambaka. On Mondays from April to August St. Stephen is closed, so the tour starts about an hour earlier and visits St. Nicholas Anapafsas or Holy Trinity instead. Expect around 30 to 40 minutes inside.
The other monasteries appear one by one from the road: Great Meteoron, the largest and highest, Varlaam with its net tower, Rousanou rising from its pillar, St. Nicholas built in floors on a narrow rock, and Holy Trinity on a sheer tower. Monastery opening hours vary by season and each closes one day a week, which is why our guide plans the visit for your date.
The Meteora sunset viewpoint
The tour ends on a wide rock platform facing the monasteries, with the sun dropping behind the Pindus mountains to the west. As the light turns gold and then red, the pillars glow, the monastery walls catch the last rays and the plain below fills with soft shadow. You have time to take photos and simply sit and watch.
The start time moves with the season so that you reach the viewpoint for sunset, earlier in winter and later in summer; the exact pickup time is confirmed the day before. The best time to visit Meteora for sunsets is spring and early autumn, when skies are clear and evenings mild. Bring a light jacket, as it cools quickly once the sun has gone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private tour?
The default option is a shared small-group tour. A private sunset tour on the same route, with your own guide and vehicle, can be chosen in the booking panel.
Can we change the itinerary or the pace?
The small-group route is fixed so that everyone reaches the viewpoint for sunset. On the private option you can ask for longer stops or a different order, within the same timing.
How many people are in the group?
Groups are small and travel together in a minibus. With the private option only your own party rides in the vehicle.
Is the price per person or per group?
Prices are per person for both options, with child rates on the shared tour. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes, pickup and drop-off at hotels in Kalambaka and Kastraki are included.
What is included?
Air-conditioned minibus, an English-speaking local guide, the audio guide app, stops at all six monasteries, time inside one, the hermit caves, the sunset viewpoint, bottled water and Wi-Fi on board.
How long is the tour and when does it start?
About four hours. The start time follows the sunset, earlier in winter and later in summer, and is confirmed the day before.
Is it suitable for children or people with reduced mobility?
Children usually love the caves and the sunset. The path to the hermit caves is rocky and uneven, so the tour does not suit wheelchair users or people who struggle on rough ground.
What should I bring?
Clothes for the monastery dress code, closed comfortable shoes, cash for entrance fees, a light jacket, water and your phone with earphones.
When is the best season for a Meteora sunset?
April to June and September to October bring clear skies and mild evenings. Summer sunsets are late and warm; in winter the tour is early and the air is cold.
Will we see the sunset if it is cloudy?
The tour runs in most weather, and the rocks are atmospheric even under clouds or mist, but the colours of the sunset cannot be guaranteed.
How do I book and confirm?
Pick your date and option in the booking panel on this page. Our team then confirms your pickup time on WhatsApp within minutes.
