Full Description
Great Meteoron, the Monastery of the Transfiguration
The largest and oldest of the active monasteries stands on the Broad Rock at about 613 m above sea level. Founded in the 14th century, it became the head of the Meteora community and holds its richest treasures. Getting there takes a climb of about 300 steps, part of them through a tunnel cut in the rock, so arriving early in the morning, before the heat and the coaches, makes a real difference.
Inside, the main church shines with 16th-century frescoes, while the museum displays carved crosses, icons, embroidered vestments and illuminated manuscripts. The old kitchen with its blackened vault and the folk exhibition with farm tools show daily life in the monastery. Allow about an hour. Great Meteoron closes on Tuesdays, when your guide chooses another monastery.
Varlaam, frescoes and the net tower
Across a narrow chasm from Great Meteoron, Varlaam takes its name from a 14th-century hermit; the monastery you see was rebuilt in 1541. Its church of All Saints is covered in frescoes painted in the mid-16th century, with the Last Judgement, the lives of saints and finely painted faces that reward a slow look.
Do not miss the wooden tower with its winch and rope net. Until the 1920s, when steps were cut into the rock, visitors and supplies were pulled up this way, and the net still lifts goods today. The terrace gives one of the best views of Great Meteoron. With a private guide you can spend 45 minutes or more here, as you prefer.
Rousanou and St. Stephen, the convents
Two of the six monasteries are convents run by nuns. Rousanou, rebuilt in the 16th century on a lower pillar and reached by small bridges, appears to grow out of the rock, and its church holds dramatic frescoes painted in 1560. St. Stephen, above Kalambaka, is reached by a short bridge without stairs, which makes it the easiest visit for families and older travellers.
Your third visit inside is usually one of these two, chosen by the guide according to the weekly closing days, since each monastery closes on a different day, St. Stephen on Mondays. Allow about 30 minutes. The nuns keep beautiful gardens, and the balcony of St. Stephen looks straight down over the roofs of Kalambaka and the Thessaly plain.
Holy Trinity, St. Nicholas and the panoramic viewpoints
Between visits our driver stops at the classic viewpoints. Holy Trinity, perhaps the most dramatic monastery, sits on a sheer pillar reached by about 140 steps cut in the rock, with a small cable car the monks use for supplies. St. Nicholas Anapafsas, the first monastery on the road from Kastraki, is built upward in several floors on a slender rock.
From the ridge above Kalambaka you see how the pillars, up to about 400 m high, rise from the plain of the Pineios river, with the Pindus mountains on the horizon. Is Meteora worth visiting if you only have a morning? With a private guide planning the order around the light and the crowds, a morning is enough to see it all well.
The hermit caves and Kastraki
Long before the first monastery, hermits from around the 11th century lived in caves high on the cliffs above Kastraki, climbing up on ladders they pulled in behind them. Your guide takes you on a short walk on a rocky path below these cave hermitages, where you can still see openings, traces of wooden floors and small chapels in the rock face.
Kastraki itself is a small village tucked between the pillars, about 2 km from Kalambaka, popular with rock climbers and travellers who want to wake up right below the rocks. The best time to visit Meteora is April to June and September to October; on summer days the morning is the most comfortable time for steps and photos.
