Full Description

Temple of Demeter near Sangri

The Temple of Demeter stands on a gentle hill in the fertile Gyroula valley near the village of Sangri, surrounded by fields and low stone walls. Built of local Naxian marble around 530 BC and dedicated to the goddess of agriculture, it is an early example of a marble Ionic temple and was later turned into a Christian basilica. Careful restoration has raised part of its columns again, and a small site museum shows architectural pieces and explains how the temple was built.

Plan about 40 minutes here to walk around the temple and enjoy the valley views. Visitors often ask about the Temple of Demeter opening hours: the site is closed on Tuesdays and usually opens in the morning until mid-afternoon, so we time your private tour accordingly. The entrance fee is paid on site. If you travel on a Tuesday, your guide spends more time in the villages instead.

Halki, the Old Capital of the Tragaia Valley

Halki (also written Chalki) sits in the middle of the Tragaia valley, a wide green basin of olive groves dotted with small Byzantine churches. For centuries it was the commercial centre of inland Naxos, and its wealth shows in the elegant neoclassical mansions, the Venetian tower house at the edge of the village and the church of Panagia Protothronos, whose walls hide some of the oldest frescoes on the island.

Today Halki is a lively little village of art galleries, ceramics workshops and shops selling citron preserves, honey, cheese and other local products. Your guide leads you through the lanes and then gives you free time to explore at your own pace, about 45 minutes. Is Halki worth visiting? It is one of the most charming villages in the Cyclades, and on a private Naxos tour you can stay longer if you fall in love with it.

Filoti and Panagia Filotitissa

Filoti is the largest village of Naxos, spread across three neighbourhoods on the slopes below Mount Zas, the highest mountain in the Cyclades. Its heart is the square shaded by a huge plane tree and the church of Panagia Filotitissa, built in 1718, with a carved marble bell tower and a richly decorated wooden iconostasis. Narrow lanes climb between whitewashed houses with views over the olive groves of the valley.

Here you have time to visit the church, sit in a café on the square or browse shops with local cheeses and cured meats made by the village's shepherds. Filoti is also the starting point for paths up Mount Zas, which you can see clearly from the village. Your guide shares stories about mountain life, farming and the traditions that still shape daily life in the inland villages of Naxos.

Your Private Tour: Pace, Pickup and Best Time to Go

Everything on this tour is reserved for your party only: the vehicle, the driver-guide and the timing. We pick you up from any address within the Naxos pickup area, and you choose a start time of 09:00, 10:00, 12:00 or 14:00. Along the way you can ask for photo stops at viewpoints over the Tragaia valley, a coffee break or more time in a village you particularly like.

The best time to visit the inland villages of Naxos is from April to June and in September and October, when the hills are green or golden and the air is mild. In July and August the morning departures are cooler and the light is softer for photos. This half-day format also leaves your afternoon free for the beach, making it perfect for families with children or travellers with only a few days on the island.
