Full Description
A private evening among the rocks of Meteora
Meteora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, is a forest of grey conglomerate pillars rising up to about 400 m above the Thessaly plain, with monasteries balanced on their summits since the 14th century. In the late afternoon the crowds of day visitors leave, the light softens and the rocks take on warm shades of gold and rose.
On a private Meteora tour you enjoy this hour with your own guide and vehicle: our driver stops wherever the view is best, children can take breaks when they need them, and photographers can wait for the light. The guide adapts the stories to your interests, whether that is the geology, the life of the monks or simply the best angles for photos.
Church of the Virgin Mary in old Kalambaka
The tour often begins in the upper old town of Kalambaka at the church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, a Byzantine basilica of the 11th to 12th centuries. Tradition holds that it stands where an ancient temple of Apollo once rose, and fragments of older marble are built into its walls and courtyard.
Inside, the unusual marble pulpit in the centre of the nave and the 16th-century frescoes of saints and Gospel scenes make it one of the most interesting churches in Thessaly. The visit takes about 15 to 20 minutes, with a small entrance fee paid in cash. Around it, quiet lanes of stone houses show the old character of the town at the foot of the rocks.
The hidden hermit caves of Badovas
Monks lived in Meteora long before the monasteries were built. From around the 11th century hermits settled alone in caves on the cliffs above Kastraki, climbing up on removable ladders. The hermitages of Badovas are a cluster of such cave cells, with remains of a chapel and wooden structures still clinging to the rock.
A short walk on a rocky path takes you below the caves, and your guide explains how the hermits lived, prayed and came together for services on feast days. With a private tour you can stay longer here, which many guests appreciate, as it is one of the quietest and most atmospheric corners of Meteora and is often missed by visitors who only drive the main road.
Inside the monasteries of Meteora
Depending on the season and the closing days, you visit the inside of one or two monasteries, usually the most popular such as Great Meteoron, the largest and highest, with its museum and old kitchen, or Varlaam, with its 16th-century frescoes and net tower. Plan about 40 to 60 minutes for each visit. Monastery opening hours are shorter in winter, which is why the number of visits can change.
From the road you also see Rousanou rising from its pillar, St. Nicholas Anapafsas built in floors on a slender rock, Holy Trinity on its sheer tower and St. Stephen above Kalambaka. Entrance fees are paid in cash at each gate, and the strict dress code applies to everyone, including children.
The Meteora sunset viewpoint
The highlight comes at the end: a broad rock platform with a panoramic view over several monasteries and the plain, where you watch the sun drop behind the Pindus mountains. The pillars turn amber, then purple, and lights begin to appear in Kalambaka below. Your guide times the route so that you arrive with enough time to settle in and take photos.
Is Meteora worth visiting at sunset? For most guests this is the moment they remember longest. The best time to visit Meteora for a clear sunset is from April to June and in September and October; summer sunsets are later and warmer, winter ones earlier and colder. After the last light we drive you back to your hotel.
