Full Description

Kalambaka and a Greek lunch at the foot of the rocks

Kalambaka, the town below the pillars of Meteora, takes its older name Stagoi from the Byzantine period, when it was the seat of a bishop. You meet the guide at the train station, where there is a car park if you drive in, and board the air-conditioned coach for a short ride to a traditional restaurant in town.

Lunch comes first, so you start the visit with energy: a fresh Greek salad, a choice of main dishes such as oven-baked vegetables, meat or chicken specialities, fresh bread and water. Vegetarian and vegan dishes are available, which is useful as halal meat is generally not available in Meteora; tell us your needs when booking and we pass them on.

Great Meteoron and Varlaam

The two largest monasteries face each other across a deep gap. Great Meteoron, founded in the 14th century on the Broad Rock at about 613 m, is the oldest and highest, with a museum of icons and manuscripts, an old kitchen and a main church covered in 16th-century frescoes. Varlaam, rebuilt in 1541, is known for its church of All Saints and its wooden net tower, once the only way up for monks and supplies.

These are usually two of your three visits inside, around 40 minutes to an hour each, depending on closing days: Great Meteoron closes on Tuesdays. Monastery opening hours are generally from morning to mid or late afternoon, which is why our guide plans the route carefully from midday.

St. Stephen, Rousanou, Holy Trinity and St. Nicholas

The third visit is often St. Stephen, a convent above Kalambaka reached by a short bridge without stairs, with a carved iconostasis and a balcony over the plain. If it is closed, as on Mondays, the guide chooses another monastery. Rousanou, a convent on its own pillar with frescoes from 1560, may also be visited.

From the panoramic stops you see Holy Trinity, perched on a sheer tower above some 140 steps, and St. Nicholas Anapafsas, built upward in floors on a narrow rock. Photo stops last about 10 to 15 minutes each. Is Meteora worth visiting in the afternoon? The light is softer than at midday in late afternoon, and the rocks glow warmly as the tour winds down.

Hermit caves, Doupiani chapel and St. George Mandilas

Monastic life in Meteora began with hermits who lived alone in caves high in the cliffs from around the 11th century. Near Kastraki you see their cave hermitages, reached in the past only by ladders, and the small chapel of Doupiani at the foot of the rocks, linked to the first organized community of monks in the 12th century.

Above the village, a cave chapel dedicated to St. George Mandilas is filled with colourful scarves: every spring, on the saint's feast day, young men from Kastraki climb the rock to hang new ones, a tradition kept for generations. The guide tells why hermits settled here a thousand years ago and how the monks managed to build on these summits.

Coming from Athens and getting to Meteora

If you are asking how to get to Meteora for this tour, you have three easy ways: drive and park at Kalambaka station, take the train from Athens with a change to a connecting coach at Palaiofarsalos, or choose the second option on this page, which adds a return air-conditioned coach from central Athens leaving at about 7:45 am, turning the tour into a Meteora day trip from Athens.

With the coach option you reach Kalambaka in time for lunch and are back in Athens late in the evening, about 14 hours in total. The best time to visit Meteora is spring and autumn, when afternoons are pleasant; in summer the coach is cool, but bring water and a hat for the stops.

Can we change the itinerary or the pace?

The route is fixed for the group, though the guide adapts the monasteries to the weekly closing days.

How many people join the group?

The group travels together on an air-conditioned coach with one guide. For a smaller, more personal visit, see our private Meteora tours.

Is the price per person or per group?

Both options are priced per person, with child rates. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.

Is hotel pickup included?

No. The tour starts at Kalambaka train station; with the Athens option the coach leaves from the Larissis station area.

What is included?

How long is the tour?

About 5 hours from Kalambaka (12:30 to about 6:00 pm), or about 14 hours with the coach from Athens.

Is it suitable for children or reduced mobility?
