Full Description
Elafonissi pink sand beach
Elafonissi lies at the southwestern tip of Crete, about 75 km from Chania, where the island meets the open Libyan Sea. The beach is famous for the pink tint of its sand, created by countless fragments of shells and tiny marine organisms with red shells that the waves wash ashore and mix with the white sand. The colour is strongest along the waterline and in the shallow bays, especially when the sun is high and the sand is wet.
Is Elafonissi worth visiting? For most travellers it is the most beautiful beach in Crete: the water is shallow and clear for long distances, ranging from pale turquoise to deep blue, and the setting feels wild and open. Sunbeds and umbrellas can usually be rented, and small canteens near the car park sell snacks and drinks.
The lagoon and Elafonissi island
Elafonissi is actually a small island separated from the mainland of Crete by a shallow lagoon. On most summer days you can wade across in water that only reaches your knees or waist, which makes the crossing an adventure that children love. On the island side you find quieter coves, low dunes and rocky points where the sea is a little deeper and good for snorkelling.
The lagoon water warms up quickly in the sun, so it is comfortable for swimming even early in the season. Take water shoes for the rocks, sun protection and drinking water, because there is little natural shade on the island. Your guide tells you the meeting time back at the coach, so you can explore freely and return without rushing.
A protected nature reserve
Elafonissi and its surroundings are part of the Natura 2000 network of protected areas because of their rare coastal habitats. Behind the beach, low sand dunes are held together by juniper trees and wild plants, and in late summer the white, scented sea lilies bloom in the sand. The area is also important for migrating birds and for small reptiles adapted to the dry coast.
To keep the beach as it is, visitors are asked not to take sand or shells, not to pick plants and to stay off the fenced dunes. The best time to visit Elafonissi is May, June, September or early October, when the weather is warm, the light is soft and the beach is calmer than in the peak weeks of July and August.
The road across western Crete
The journey is part of the experience. From Rethymno the coach follows the north coast west past Chania, then turns south into the rugged hills of western Crete, where the road winds through olive groves, chestnut woods and small mountain villages before descending towards the southwest coast. The drive takes around three hours each way, and the views of the White Mountains and the sea are worth staying awake for.
Many travellers ask how to get to Elafonissi from Rethymno; the honest answer is that the narrow roads and the long distance make a coach trip the easiest choice. Close to the beach stands the whitewashed Monastery of Chrysoskalitissa on a rock above the sea, one of the landmarks of this remote corner of the island.
