Full Description
Palace of Knossos – the heart of Minoan Crete
Knossos, about five kilometres south of Heraklion, was the greatest centre of the Minoan civilisation, Europe's first advanced Bronze Age culture. The palace complex grew from around 1900 BC and covered more than two hectares, with hundreds of rooms set around a large central court. Its maze of corridors and storerooms is linked with the ancient legend of the labyrinth.
Is Knossos worth visiting? Without doubt: it is the most visited archaeological site on Crete. Parts of the palace were reconstructed in concrete in the early 20th century, which helps you imagine the original scale even if purists debate it. Look for the Throne Room with its stone seat, the grand staircase, the giant clay storage jars in the west magazines, and the fresco replicas such as the charging bull at the north entrance. On this Knossos day trip from Rethymno you have about two hours to explore without a guide, at your own pace.
Visiting Knossos – tickets, hours and tips
Knossos Palace opening hours are longer in summer, usually from early morning to evening, and shorter between November and March; the site is open every day except a few national holidays. The entry ticket is not included in this trip and is bought at the gate; young visitors from the European Union and children may enter at a reduced rate or free with ID, so carry your passport.
The site has little shade and can be crowded from late spring to early autumn, especially at midday. Wear comfortable shoes for the uneven paths and steps, bring water and a hat, and start at the north entrance and central court before the tour groups arrive. Information panels in English explain each area clearly, so the free visit is easy to follow.
Heraklion Archaeological Museum
The Heraklion Archaeological Museum holds the finest collection of Minoan art in the world, gathered from Knossos and other palaces across Crete. Highlights include the original frescoes, among them the bull-leaping scene and the blue dolphins, the clay Phaistos Disc with its still undeciphered spiral script, delicate gold jewellery, carved stone vessels and the small faience snake-goddess figures.
The coach makes an optional stop near the museum for those who wish to visit it on their own; others can continue straight to the centre. Plan at least an hour and a half for the main Minoan galleries. The museum ticket is paid on site, and seeing the originals after walking through Knossos makes both visits far more meaningful.
Heraklion city centre – free time
Heraklion is Crete's capital and largest city, a busy modern port wrapped in massive Venetian walls. In the centre, Lions Square takes its name from the 17th-century Venetian fountain with four stone lions, and nearby the elegant Venetian Loggia now serves as the city hall. A short stroll north brings you to the old harbour and the Koules, the Venetian sea fortress at the end of the breakwater.
For local flavour, wander along 1866 Street, the old market lane lined with stalls selling cheese, herbs, honey, olive oil, rusks and sweets. You have about three hours of free time to eat, shop and explore. Halal restaurants are rare in Heraklion, but grilled fish, salads and vegetarian Cretan dishes are easy to find in the tavernas around the centre.
Rethymno to Heraklion – the journey and best time to go
The drive from Rethymno to Knossos takes about an hour and a half along the north coast national road, with views of the sea on one side and the mountains of central Crete on the other. How to get to Knossos from Rethymno without a car? This day trip is the easiest way, with no parking to find and no timetable changes to manage.
The best time to visit Knossos is spring (April to June) and autumn (September and October), when temperatures are pleasant for exploring the open site. In July and August, arriving in the morning as this trip does is the smartest choice, and the afternoon in Heraklion lets you shelter in the museum, cafés and shaded streets during the hottest hours.
