Full Description

Rethymno and the start at the base

Rethymno lies on the north coast of Crete, between Chania and Heraklion, and is best known for its Venetian harbour, its lighthouse and the great Fortezza fortress on the hill above the old town. Behind this lively seaside town, the land rises quickly into olive groves, gorges and rugged hills that most visitors never see. That landscape is the playground of this quad safari.

We collect you from your hotel within Rethymno at the agreed time and drive you to the base just outside town. Here you meet your guide, receive your helmet and a full safety briefing, and practise riding before setting off. No previous quad experience is needed, but every driver must have a full car driving licence held for at least a year.

Maroulas and the mountain trails

The first part of the ride heads south-east into the hills towards Maroulas, a traditional village of stone mansions and old towers from the Venetian period, set on a slope with wide views to the sea. The route mixes quiet country roads with dirt tracks, so you can build confidence before the trails become rougher.

Soon the group leaves the asphalt for off-road routes through rugged terrain, olive groves and dry riverbeds, with a few shallow water crossings that add to the fun. The guide sets a safe pace and keeps the group together, stopping regularly so everyone can catch up. Wear clothes and closed shoes that you do not mind getting dusty.

The panoramic viewpoint over Rethymno

High in the hills the group stops at a spectacular mountain viewpoint. Below you lies the whole of Rethymno, from the Fortezza and the old town to the long sandy beach that stretches east along the coast, with the deep blue Cretan Sea beyond. On clear days you can see the outline of the coast for many kilometres.

It is the best photo stop of the morning, so take your time. Is a quad safari in Rethymno worth it? For travellers who want to see the wild inland side of Crete in a few hours, it is one of the most memorable things to do. The best time for this tour is spring and autumn, when it is cooler; in summer the morning departure avoids the strongest heat.

Prassies village and the coffee-house break

From the viewpoint the route continues through the countryside to Prassies, a quiet traditional village south of Rethymno surrounded by olive trees and close to a green gorge. Its narrow lanes, old stone houses and small churches show the authentic village life of inland Crete, far from the tourist resorts.

Here you take a relaxing break at a traditional kafenion, the village coffee house where locals meet, with time to rest, drink a Greek coffee or a soft drink and enjoy your sandwich. Then you get back on your quad for the final stretch to the base, from where we drive you back to your hotel about four hours after pickup.
