Full Description
Arkadi Monastery – the symbol of Cretan freedom
Arkadi Monastery stands on a plateau about 23 kilometres south-east of Rethymno, among olive and cypress trees at the foot of the Psiloritis range. Its double-naved church, completed in 1587, has one of the finest Venetian Renaissance façades on Crete, with Corinthian columns and a delicate bell gable. Around it, the fortified courtyard holds monks' cells, a refectory and a small museum of icons and relics.
In November 1866, during a Cretan uprising, hundreds of fighters, women and children took refuge here under siege. Rather than surrender, they set fire to the gunpowder store, and the explosion became a turning point that won wide sympathy for Crete's cause. Is Arkadi Monastery worth visiting? It is the most meaningful historic site near Rethymno, and the old powder room and the memorial are deeply moving. Allow about an hour; a small entry fee is paid on site, and shoulders and knees should be covered.
Melidoni Cave – a sacred cavern with a tragic past
Melidoni Cave, also called Gerospilios, opens on a hillside above the village of Melidoni, about 30 kilometres east of Rethymno. Steps lead down into a huge main chamber decorated with stalactites and stalagmites, with smaller halls branching off. In antiquity it was a place of worship dedicated to Hermes, and inscriptions and offerings found inside confirm its long sacred use.
In 1824, during the Greek War of Independence, villagers who had sheltered inside lost their lives when the entrance was blocked and fires were lit, and a small memorial in the cave honours them. The visit takes about 30 to 40 minutes; the steps can be damp, so good shoes help. Melidoni Cave opening hours generally run from spring to autumn, and the small entry fee is not included. Afterwards there is time for a coffee with a wide view over the valley.
Margarites – the pottery village
Margarites is a hillside village of stone houses and narrow lanes, about 27 kilometres south-east of Rethymno. It has been a pottery centre for generations thanks to the fine local clay, and several family workshops still shape large jars, bowls and decorative pieces on the wheel and fire them in traditional kilns.
On this tour you stop at a workshop to watch a potter at work and see how a lump of clay becomes a vessel in a few minutes. It is a favourite moment for children and a good place to buy an authentic, handmade souvenir straight from the maker. The village square, with its old plane tree and cafés, offers views across the valley towards the sea.
Potamon Dam viewpoint
The Potamon Dam created a long reservoir among the green hills south of Rethymno, one of the few lakes on Crete. Framed by mountains and olive slopes, its still water reflects the sky and changes colour with the light, and in spring the surrounding fields are covered in wild flowers.
The tour pauses at a viewpoint above the dam for a short photo stop before heading back to Rethymno. It is a calm, scenic end to the circuit and a reminder of how green the Cretan interior can be, far from the busy coast. In winter and spring, when the reservoir is full, the view is at its most impressive, and birds such as herons can sometimes be seen along the shore.
Planning your Arkadi day trip from Rethymno
How to get to Arkadi Monastery from Rethymno? The monastery is about 40 minutes by road, but public buses are infrequent, so a tour that combines Arkadi with Melidoni and Margarites is the most practical choice. This shared tour returns in the early afternoon, so you can still enjoy the beach or the old town later the same day.
The best time to visit Arkadi and the caves is spring and autumn, when the countryside is green and the air is mild; in summer the morning start keeps you ahead of the strongest heat. Several pickup zones are available, from Rethymno town to Panormo and Platanias, and private options with a people carrier, a driver or a guide let you choose your own start time.
