Full Description

The Dikti Mountains and the 4x4 drive

From Heraklion the road climbs into the Dikti Mountains, the range that closes off the Lasithi Plateau. The 4x4 gives you comfortable access to viewpoints, gorges and side roads that coach tours skip, and the small group means you can stop for photos.

A Crete 4x4 safari like this is about landscape and local life rather than adrenaline, with a guide who tells stories about the villages, the shepherds and the mountain roads. The ride to the plateau takes a little over an hour depending on stops. Sit by a window if you can, as the views change from coastal plain to olive terraces to bare limestone peaks.

Lasithi Plateau and its villages

The Lasithi Plateau is a wide, fertile plain about 850 m above sea level, ringed by mountains and famous for its apples, potatoes and vegetables. A Lasithi Plateau tour passes traditional villages, stone houses and the remains of the thousands of windmills once used to pump water for the fields.

Villages on the route may include Psychro and Tzermiado, with time to walk, see the local life and take photos. It is one of the most beautiful and authentic areas of Crete, and one of the best day trips from Heraklion for people who prefer mountains to beaches.

The Cave of Zeus at Psychro

The Cave of Zeus, also called the Dictaean Cave, is the mythical birthplace of Zeus, who according to legend was hidden here as a baby from his father Cronus. It lies high on the slope above Psychro and was a cult site in Minoan times, with offerings found inside.

You walk up a path and go down steps into a large cave with stalactites and stalagmites, cool and damp even in summer. Wear shoes with good grip. The entrance ticket is not included and is paid on site, and the cave opening hours change by season.

The mountain farm and the Cretan lunch

The tour includes a stop at a mountain farm, where you can see how goats are milked and try local cheese. It is a simple, friendly stop and a chance to see rural Crete up close.

Lunch is a traditional Cretan meal, with water, in a village taverna. Dishes are local and family-style, and the meal gives you time to rest before the drive back. Hotel drop-off completes the day in the late afternoon. Ask your guide how the cheese is made and how mountain herders in Crete have kept these traditions alive for generations, then relax with your group.

Planning your Zeus Cave and Lasithi Plateau tour

The tour starts around 08:00 and lasts about 8 hours, with hotel pick-up in Heraklion and nearby areas. Vehicles carry up to 8 people, and the ride includes some winding mountain roads, so travellers prone to motion sickness should sit at the front.

Bring a light jacket, as the plateau and the cave are cooler than the coast. The best time to visit the Cave of Zeus is in the morning, before the busiest hours. Children are welcome, with child prices covering ages 2 to 11. Check the weather forecast before you go, because clouds and rain on the plateau can change the views quickly.
