Full Description

Buggy base near Agia Pelagia: briefing and driving introduction

The safari starts at our base near Agia Pelagia, a seaside village about 20 km west of Heraklion. You arrive 30 minutes before departure, sign the liability waiver and listen to a safety briefing and a short driving introduction before you set off.

A Crete buggy tour like this is a guided group safari rather than a rental. The guide leads the convoy at a steady pace, and each buggy has room for a driver and a passenger, so friends and couples can share. Solo drivers should choose the single-driver option.

The olive mill and olive oil tasting

A highlight is the olive mill visit, where a guide explains ancient and modern methods of pressing olives and how olive oil has shaped daily life in Crete. This olive mill tour lasts about 30 minutes and includes a look at the old stone presses and the modern equipment.

You finish with a free olive oil tasting and a sample of local products, which many guests buy to take with them. Combined with the scenery, it makes the safari more than just a drive. Ask the guide about the olive varieties grown around the village and how the harvest season shapes the work of local families.

The ghost village of the Cretan mountains

Next comes a guided walk through a ghost village in the mountains, a settlement that has been almost emptied of its people and is now surrounded by silent hills. The buggies stop at the edge, and you explore the stone houses and lanes on foot for about 30 minutes.

This ghost village in Crete is one of the most photogenic places on the route, especially in the soft light of the morning or late afternoon. Your guide explains why the villagers left and what life used to be like. Wear closed shoes here, since the stone lanes are uneven and the guide may point out old doorways and walls.

Fodele and the birthplace of El Greco

The final stop is Fodele, a lush riverside village surrounded by orange groves and known as the birthplace of the painter El Greco. You pass the museum dedicated to him and then have about 25 minutes of free time to walk, take photos and browse the small shops.

Try the freshly squeezed orange juice if you like, then rejoin the group for the scenic drive back through olive groves and along mountain tracks, where you may spot goats, sheep and birds of prey. It is a pleasant place to finish, with shade from the trees and a cool breeze near the water on warm days.

Planning your buggy safari: age, licence and the two options

Drivers must be at least 18 and hold a valid driving licence that is at least a year old. Passengers are welcome from age 4, the weight limit is 190 kg per buggy, and children under 3 and pregnant women cannot take part. Your best time to book is the morning or afternoon slot that suits you.

Choose the shared buggy if two of you want to split the driving, or the single-driver option to drive alone. Wear closed shoes and comfortable clothes, and bring your licence. Hotel pick-up is not included.
