Full Description

Finikia horse riding centre near Heraklion

The tour starts at the Finikia horse riding centre, a friendly farm in the hills near Heraklion. When you arrive you are welcomed with a cup of coffee or tea on the morning tour, fill in a safety form and check your weight with the team before meeting your horse.

This is a good choice if you are looking for horse riding in Crete without a long journey. A basic riding lesson comes first, so even beginners feel safe before the group sets off, and the guides match horses to the rider's experience.

The mountain trail ride

The ride lasts about two hours in total and follows countryside and mountain trails through olive groves, scrub and rocky slopes. You ride for about 50 minutes to the top of the hills, stop for a break and then ride for another 45 minutes or so back to the stables.

Groups are mixed, so the pace suits everyone, and advanced riders only may be offered a canter when the weather permits. The route, pace and duration can change for the welfare of the horses and for safety, especially in extreme weather.

Views towards Mount Juktas, where Zeus sleeps

At the break in the mountains you can take photos and enjoy the view across the countryside towards Archanes and Mount Juktas. According to Cretan legend, the outline of the mountain looks like a sleeping bearded man, and it is the place where Zeus is said to rest.

It is a quiet, panoramic stop that connects the ride to the mythology of the island. Ask your instructor to point out the summit and tell the story behind it. Bring a camera or phone with a secure strap, and take pictures while the horses rest so that your hands stay free while riding.

Cretan lunch or dinner on the farm

After the ride you sit down in the garden of the farm for a traditional Cretan meal with fruit, lunch on the morning departure and dinner on the afternoon departure. It is simple, family-style food in a relaxed setting with a view of the horses.

The afternoon tour lets you ride as the light softens towards sunset, which many guests find the most atmospheric time. After the meal you can spend a few minutes with the horses before returning to your hotel if you booked a transfer. Let the team know about any food preferences when you arrive, and they will explain what is served.

Planning your horse riding tour: weight limit, clothes and pick-up

The maximum rider weight is 110 kg, checked on a scale at the farm, and guests over the limit cannot ride. The tour suits young children, beginners and intermediate or advanced riders. Wear long trousers, closed shoes and sunscreen, and bring sunglasses.

Optional hotel pick-up from Malia to Ammoudara is available on request, with limited availability and no guarantee for last-minute requests. Other areas such as Agia Pelagia, Sisi, Lygaria, Fodele and Palaiokastro are not covered by the option. On very hot days the team may adjust the timing and give the horses extra rest, so follow the instructor's advice.
