Overview

This Blue Caves boat trip is the quickest and most direct way to experience the famous sea caves at the northern tip of Zakynthos. It is a shared one-hour trip in a small boat, departing every hour from the harbour of Agios Nikolaos in the Volimes area. The boat is small enough to glide into the caves themselves, through a chain of chambers that includes the Great Cave and the Little Cave, where the water glows an intense electric blue. Inside the Great Cave the boat stops for a 20-minute swim. A Greek and English-speaking crew looks after you. It suits families, couples and friends who want the highlight of the north coast without spending a whole day at sea.

Full Description

The Blue Caves of Zakynthos

The Blue Caves are a series of sea caves and arches carved by the waves into the white limestone cliffs of Cape Skinari, the northernmost point of Zakynthos. Sunlight enters through the openings and reflects off the white sea floor, so the water inside shines a brilliant blue and the reflections dance on the cave walls. Anything that touches the water, including swimmers, seems to glow.

The caves are among the most famous natural sights of the Ionian Islands, and seeing them from a small boat is the best way to appreciate them. Are the Blue Caves worth visiting? Yes, especially on a calm, sunny morning, when the colours are at their strongest and the sea is usually smooth.

Inside the Great Cave: the swim stop

The boat threads through consecutive chambers to reach the Great Cave, the largest in the system, and the Little Cave beside it. Only small boats can enter, which is what makes this short trip special. Once inside the Great Cave, the boat stops and you have about 20 minutes to swim in the blue water, with the arched rock ceiling above you.

The water is deep and clear, so confident swimmers will enjoy it most; non-swimmers can stay on board and watch the light play on the walls. Bring a mask if you have one, as the view underwater is stunning. The crew decides where the boat can stop safely depending on the swell and the number of boats in the cave.

Agios Nikolaos harbour and how to get there

Agios Nikolaos is a small harbour on the north-east coast of Zakynthos, in the Volimes area, about 35 kilometres from Zakynthos Town, roughly 45 to 50 minutes by car. In summer it is also the port for the short ferry to Kefalonia, and a few cafés line the quay. The boat trips to the Blue Caves start right from the jetty, so the cruise to the caves takes only a few minutes.

Hotel transfers are not included, so plan how to get to the Blue Caves from your area: a rental car, a taxi or a private transfer, which our team can arrange on request. There is parking near the harbour. Arrive 15 minutes before your chosen departure; boats leave every hour from 09:00 to 14:00.

Cape Skinari and the northern coast

Above the caves stands the Cape Skinari lighthouse, with an old stone windmill nearby and views across the strait to Kefalonia. The coast here is wild and steep, with white cliffs falling into turquoise water and small coves reachable only by sea. Further down the west coast lies the famous Navagio cove, which is not part of this short trip.

The best time to visit the Blue Caves is in the morning, from late May to September, when the sunlight enters the caves directly and the water is calmest. In the afternoon the north-west wind can raise the sea, and on rough days the boats may not be able to enter the caves; in that case the crew changes the route or we offer you another departure.
