Full Description
From Argostoli across the island
The tour starts in Argostoli, the capital of Kefalonia, with pickup from the town and from the cruise ship terminal on the seafront. The coach climbs out of the bay and crosses the island eastwards, below the slopes of Mount Ainos, the highest mountain of the Ionian Islands, which is covered with a rare native fir forest. The drive to the first cave takes about fifty minutes.
Along the way the guide introduces the island: its limestone geology full of hidden caves and sinkholes, the great earthquake of 1953 that destroyed most villages, and the farming life of the valleys. A Melissani and Drogarati day trip from Argostoli is the classic half-day excursion on Kefalonia, and doing it with transport and tickets arranged saves you the narrow mountain roads and the parking queues.
Drogarati cave
Drogarati cave lies near the village of Chaliotata, a few kilometres from the port of Sami. Its entrance was revealed about three centuries ago when an earthquake caused part of the roof to collapse. A long stairway leads down into the main hall, a huge chamber full of stalactites and stalagmites that have grown drop by drop over thousands of years. The temperature inside stays cool all year, a pleasant relief on hot summer days.
The main hall has such remarkable acoustics that concerts have been held inside. You spend about forty-five minutes in the cave with our guide, who explains how the formations grew. The steps can be damp and uneven, so comfortable shoes are essential. Drogarati cave opening hours follow the tourist season, roughly April to October, during the day.
Melissani lake: the cave of the nymphs
A short drive away, between Sami and Agia Efimia, lies Melissani, one of the most photographed places in Greece. It is a cave whose roof collapsed long ago, leaving a deep lake open to the sky. When the sun is high, its light falls straight onto the water and turns it a glowing turquoise, while the far end of the lake continues into a dark cave chamber. Local legend says the lake was home to nymphs, and remains of an ancient sanctuary have been found here.
The water is a mix of sea water and fresh water that flows underground from the west of the island. You descend through a short tunnel, board a small rowing boat and glide across the lake for about ten to fifteen minutes. The best time to visit Melissani is around midday, when the light is strongest.
The Myrtos beach viewpoint
On the way back to Argostoli the coach takes the road along the north-west coast, high above the sea, and stops at the viewpoint over Myrtos beach. From here you look down on a long curve of brilliant white pebbles at the foot of steep limestone cliffs, with water that shades from turquoise to deep blue. It is the most famous view on Kefalonia and appears on almost every postcard of the island.
The stop lasts about ten minutes, enough time for photographs and a look along the coast. Is Myrtos worth visiting for a swim? Yes, but the road down is long and steep and the beach has no shade, so many visitors prefer this view. The coach then returns to Argostoli, about four hours after pickup.
