Full Description

Bali: the starting point

Bali is a former fishing village on the north coast of Crete, roughly halfway between Rethymno and Heraklion. Its houses spill down a hillside to a string of small, sheltered coves with very clear water, and behind it the land rises quickly into terraced hills and mountains. It is one of the most scenic small resorts in the Rethymno region and a good base for exploring central Crete.

The quad safari starts from the base in Bali. After pickup from your hotel in the Bali or Panormo area, the guide gives a safety update, fits your helmet and lets you practise on a quiet track until you feel comfortable. Only then does the group leave the coast behind, so even first-time riders set off with confidence.

Olive groves and country roads

Inland from Bali the hills are covered with olive trees, some of them centuries old, planted in long terraces that follow the contours of the land. This is one of the largest olive-growing areas on Crete, and the tracks between the groves are used mainly by farmers, which makes them perfect for a quad ride away from traffic.

The guide leads the group along provincial roads and dirt tracks that only locals know, with regular stops for photos and to explain the landscape. On the way you pass fields of wild herbs, stone walls and small chapels, and you feel the wild beauty of the Cretan countryside far from the busy coast. The pace is adapted to the group, so you never feel rushed.

Traditional villages of the Milopotamos area

The route links several small villages of the Milopotamos area, where narrow lanes wind between stone houses built in the 17th and 18th centuries. Venetian arched doorways sit beside Ottoman-era fountains and balconies, a reminder of the many rulers who left their mark on Crete over the centuries.

Riding slowly through these villages, you meet local people sitting outside the coffee shops, see gardens of lemon trees and vines growing over doorways, and get a real sense of everyday life inland. These are places few visitors reach on their own, and the quad makes it easy to see several of them in one morning or afternoon. Ride slowly and quietly through the lanes, as the guide asks, out of respect for the villagers.

Melidoni Cave

The Melidoni Cave lies on a hill above the village of Melidoni and is one of the most important caves on Crete. Its large main chamber is decorated with stalactites and stalagmites, and archaeological finds show it was a place of worship in antiquity. The cave is also a solemn memorial: in 1824 hundreds of villagers who had taken refuge inside lost their lives during the struggle for independence, and an ossuary in the main hall honours them.

On the safari you park the quads near the entrance and visit the cave on foot, usually for about 30 to 40 minutes. Paths and steps lead down into the main chamber, which stays cool even in summer. Is the Melidoni Cave worth visiting? Its natural beauty and moving history make it one of the most meaningful stops in the Rethymno region.

Views of Mount Psiloritis

Mount Psiloritis, also called Mount Ida, is the highest mountain on Crete at 2,456 metres. Its broad summit dominates the centre of the island and often keeps a cap of snow into late spring, while its lower slopes are covered with olive groves, oak woods and shepherds' stone huts.

From the high points of the route the group stops to enjoy a panoramic view over a wide valley dotted with villages and the bulk of Psiloritis beyond. It is the perfect spot for a break with your sandwich pack and mineral water, and for photos of the landscape before the ride back down towards Bali and the drop-off at your hotel.
