Full Description
Sarakiniko, the moonscape of Milos
Sarakiniko on the north coast is the most famous landscape of Milos: a bay of smooth, brilliant white volcanic rock, shaped by wind and waves into waves, ledges and gullies that look like the surface of the moon. The rock is formed from layers of volcanic ash and pumice, and the deep blue inlet in the middle creates a striking contrast. Its name is thought to come from the pirates who once sheltered here.
On this private Sarakiniko tour your guide shows you the best paths down to the water and the viewpoints for photos, away from the busiest spots. There are no opening hours, but early morning and late afternoon bring softer light and fewer people. There is no shade, so bring a hat. Many travellers asking how to get to Sarakiniko simply find it easiest with a driver who knows the roads.
Papafragas, the hidden sea inlet
Papafragas is a narrow fjord-like inlet on the north coast, between Sarakiniko and Pollonia. Tall walls of pale rock close around a tiny strip of beach, and a natural arch opens towards the sea, so the water inside stays calm and turquoise. Steps cut into the rock lead down from the road, and from the top you look straight into the clear water below.
In the past, pirates and fishermen used this hidden cove as a shelter, and nearby lie the remains of Phylakopi, one of the oldest settlements of the Cyclades. Your guide explains the island's volcanic past and its ancient trade in obsidian, the black volcanic glass that made Milos famous thousands of years ago. A stop here usually lasts around 15 to 20 minutes, longer if you wish.
Mandrakia and Klima, the fishing villages
The traditional fishing settlements of Milos are among the island's most charming sights. Their houses, called syrmata, are built right at the edge of the sea: the boats are kept on the ground floor behind brightly painted doors, and the families live upstairs. Mandrakia, on the north coast, is a tiny harbour with a handful of syrmata, a small chapel and a peaceful atmosphere.
Klima, at the entrance of the great bay, is the best known, with a long row of white houses and doors in red, blue, green and yellow reflected in the water. It is one of the most photographed villages in Greece and a lovely place to watch the sunset. With a private guide, you can take your time for photos and hear how these families have lived from the sea for generations.
Plaka, the hilltop capital of Milos
Plaka is the capital of Milos, built on a hill high above the bay. Its narrow lanes are paved with stone and lined with whitewashed houses, blue doors and flowering bougainvillea, and there are no cars in the centre. Small squares, churches and shops make it pleasant to wander, and the archaeological museum and folk museum are close by.
Above the village rises the Kastro, the old castle hill, with a chapel and a panoramic view over the whole bay and the neighbouring islands. Near the church of Panagia Korfiatissa a wide terrace looks down to the sea. Your guide shows you the best viewpoints and the story of the town. Plaka is also the place many visitors choose for sunset, so you may want to return later.
Firopotamos and the private-tour difference
Firopotamos is a small, sheltered bay on the northwest coast with clear turquoise water, a few syrmata and a white chapel standing on a rocky point. The remains of an old mining building recall the island's long history of extracting minerals. It is one of the most beautiful swimming spots on Milos, calm on most days.
The private format makes the difference on this island, where roads are narrow and parking near the famous sights is scarce. Your vehicle and guide are only for your party, so you choose the start time, decide how long to stay at each stop and ask every question you like. The tour runs in all weather; the best time to visit Milos is from May to October, and the island is reached by ferry from Piraeus or by short flight.
