Full Description
Fyriplaka beach: the starting point
The tour begins on Fyriplaka, one of the longest beaches on the south coast of Milos. Behind the sand rise cliffs in shades of white, pink and rust, the remains of a volcanic crater that was active in prehistoric times. It is a beautiful place to start, with shallow water near the shore that makes the first strokes easy for beginners.
How to get to Fyriplaka: the beach is about twenty minutes by car or taxi from Adamas, and summer buses run from Adamas to the south-coast beaches. There is parking above the beach. You meet our guide on the sand, receive a life jacket, a waterproof bag and a phone case, and get a short paddling lesson before launching. Single kayaks can be requested by experienced paddlers.
The volcanic coast between Fyriplaka and Tsigrado
From Fyriplaka the group paddles east along a coastline that tells the geological story of Milos. Layers of volcanic ash and lava have been eroded into overhangs, small arches and caves just big enough to enter by kayak. Our guide leads you into the safest openings, where the water turns deep blue in the shade and the sound of the sea echoes off the rock.
Along the way you pass tiny islets and sheltered bays that walkers on the cliff paths never see. The pace is relaxed, with time to stop, drift and take photos with the action camera fixed on your kayak. If the weather is favourable, the guide may also lead you to a hidden volcanic beach that is only reached from the sea.
Tsigrado: the ladder cove
Tsigrado is one of the most talked-about beaches on Milos. On land, the only way down is through a narrow cleft in the cliff using a rope and a wooden ladder, which many visitors find difficult. Arriving by kayak, you simply pull up on the fine white sand and enjoy a cove of crystal-clear, pale turquoise water enclosed by tall white walls.
This is the first swim and snorkel stop, with a homemade treat to keep your energy up. Masks and tubes are provided, and the clear water reveals sand, rock and small fish. Is Tsigrado worth visiting? From the water, without the climb, it is one of the easiest and most rewarding ways to see it, and the best time to visit Tsigrado is in the morning before the cove fills up.
Gerakas beach and the paddle back
A little further east lies Gerakas, a quiet beach below pale cliffs, with emerald water and almost no development. Reached on land only by a rough track, it is rarely crowded, and from a kayak it feels like a private bay. Here you swim and snorkel again, and in summer you may be lucky enough to spot a sea turtle looking for food on the seabed.
After the last stop the group paddles back west along the same coastline to Fyriplaka, with the sun now lighting the cliffs from a different angle. The total paddling distance is moderate and broken by long breaks. The best time to kayak in Milos is from late May to early October, with calm mornings; on windy days the guide may adapt the route or reschedule.
