Full Description
Sailing the Santorini caldera
The caldera of Santorini was created by one of the largest volcanic eruptions in human history, around 1600 BC, which blew out the centre of the island and left a ring of steep cliffs surrounding a deep bay. From the water you see the white villages of Fira, Firostefani and Oia perched along the rim, high above the sea. The cruise sets off from Athinios port on a traditional wooden boat with plenty of deck space.
A local guide gives audio commentary in English about the geology and history of the islands as you sail. If you are looking for the best way to see Santorini's volcano, a boat trip like this shows it from every side. The cruise season is from spring to autumn, and the sea is calmest in the morning.
Nea Kameni, the volcano
Nea Kameni is the black lava island at the centre of the caldera, formed by eruptions over the centuries, the most recent in 1950. After landing at its small pier, you can follow a path to the crater rim, walking on dark volcanic rock with steam vents and views over the whole caldera. The walk is unguided, so you can go at your own pace.
The volcano entrance fee is paid on site in cash and is not included in the tour price. Wear sturdy shoes, a hat and sunscreen, as there is no shade. If you are asking whether the Santorini volcano hike is worth it, it is one of the most striking short walks in Greece, and it takes about half an hour to reach the top.
Palea Kameni hot springs
Palea Kameni is a smaller volcanic island where warm, sulphur-rich water flows into the sea, tinting it a rusty orange. For safety the boat stops about fifty metres from the springs, and swimmers make their way through the sea to the warm patch, which is up to four degrees warmer than the surrounding water. A stop of around thirty minutes is planned.
The mineral water can stain light-coloured swimwear, so wear something dark. Swimming here is not recommended for people with heart conditions, sulphur allergies, pregnancy or limited swimming ability. Foam pool noodles and changing facilities are available on board, and a Santorini hot springs cruise is a fun experience for most families with confident swimmers.
Thirassia island
Thirassia is the western part of the ancient island that was split by the eruption, and it is much quieter and more traditional than Santorini. A small fishing village sits on its clifftop, and the bay below has clear water that is ideal for a swim. Many people find the pace here a relaxing contrast to Santorini's busy resorts.
The boat stops in the bay for another swim, weather permitting. If you plan to book the Thirassia cruise from Santorini, bring swimwear, a towel and sunscreen. Lunch and drinks are not included, and snacks and soft drinks can be bought on board. Times and stops may change with weather and sea conditions, for safety.
