Full Description

Fira and the cable car from the old port

Cruise ships in Santorini anchor in the caldera, and passengers come ashore by tender at the old port below Fira. From there the cable car climbs the cliff in a few minutes to the island's capital, perched on the caldera rim. The cable car tickets are paid separately, and in peak season there can be long queues, so it is wise to come ashore early.

Your guide meets you at the exit of the upper station and starts with a short walk to Fira's caldera viewpoints, where the white town looks down on the deep blue lagoon and the dark volcanic islands in its centre. This caldera was formed by the great Bronze Age eruption around 1600 BC, one of the largest volcanic events in human history.

Pyrgos village and Kasteli

A short drive takes you to Pyrgos, one of the most traditional villages of Santorini, built on a hill in the centre of the island. Its houses wrap around the summit in rings, a layout designed in medieval times to defend the village from pirates, and narrow lanes and arched passages wind up to the remains of the Venetian Kasteli castle.

From the top, the view sweeps across the whole island, from the caldera to the black-sand beaches of the east coast. Pyrgos is calmer than Oia and Fira and shows the authentic side of the island. You spend about 30 minutes walking the lanes with your guide. It is also a good place to understand how islanders lived before tourism, with old churches tucked into every corner.

Oia: blue domes and caldera views

Oia, on the northern tip of the island, is the village most people picture when they think of Santorini: white cube houses and cave dwellings carved into the cliff, blue-domed churches and windmills, all hanging above the caldera. Rebuilt after the 1956 earthquake, it keeps the look of a traditional sea captains' village.

This is the longest stop, about 70 minutes, with time to walk the marble main street, find the famous viewpoints of the blue domes, browse galleries and shops, or sit for a coffee looking over the sea. The bus parks a short walk from the village centre. Your guide points out the best photo spots and the quieter lanes away from the main crowds, so you make the most of your time in Oia.

Imerovigli, Firostefani and the caldera walk

Imerovigli stands at the highest point of the caldera rim, which is why it is called the balcony of the Aegean. From here you see the rock of Skaros, once the site of a medieval fortress, jutting into the sea, and the whole sweep of the caldera to the south.

From Imerovigli you walk along the caldera-edge path back to Fira, about 40 minutes on foot through the quiet village of Firostefani. This walk from Imerovigli to Fira is one of the most beautiful walks on the island, with postcard views at every turn and far fewer crowds. The tour ends in Fira near the cable car, so you can take it down to the port when you are ready.
